The lead

June 1, 2026 - St. Petersburg - Dillon Dingler hit two of Detroit's season-high five home runs, Riley Greene finished a triple shy of the cycle, and the Detroit Tigers stopped a four-game skid by holding off the Tampa Bay Rays 10-9, per the Associated Press recap on ABC News.

Dingler went 4-for-5 with four RBIs in his first multi-homer game. The Tigers hit three consecutive homers in the third—their first such sequence since August 8, 2020.

How the game turned

Greene's two-run double in the first gave Detroit a 2-0 lead. In the third, Dingler homered off Griffin Jax (1-4), Kerry Carpenter followed with a solo shot, and Greene went deep for a 6-0 cushion.

Ryan Vilade's three-run homer made it 8-5 in the sixth. Dingler homered again leading off the fifth for 7-2, and Hao-Yu Lee added a solo shot in the sixth. Carpenter's two-run double with two outs in the eighth pushed it to 10-5—insurance the Tigers needed when Tampa Bay batted around for four runs in the bottom of the frame.

Nick Fortes doubled in two runs and Ben Williamson singled in two more to make it 10-9. Will Vest recorded five outs for his first save of 2026.

Pitching and matchup notes

Tyler Holton (1-4) won in relief with 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Detroit used seven pitchers who allowed eight walks but held the Rays to eight hits. Jack Flaherty (0-7) did not factor in the decision.

Junior Caminero homered for Tampa Bay. Rays outfielder Chandler Simpson left after a headfirst slide into second in the fourth.
