Stars 5, Sharks 0: Oettinger's 13 and Dallas's First Win

October 5, 2026 - Dallas - Macklin Celebrini took warmups, left the ice early, and never dressed. The NHL recap called it a late scratch with a lower-body injury. San Jose's captain was still being evaluated, coach Ryan Warsofsky told NHL.com. The Dallas Stars took the opening and did not give it back.

Dallas beat the San Jose Sharks 5-0 at American Airlines Center. First win of the season after two losses. Jake Oettinger stopped all 13 shots for his 17th career shutout. The NHL recap and the NHL box both say 13. The AP recap on ESPN said 14. Thirteen is the number that matches the gamecenter file. Yaroslav Askarov stopped 21 of 26.

Shots were 26-13 Dallas. San Jose is 2-1-0. The NHL recap said Dallas extended its point streak against the Sharks to 10 games (9-0-1).

Heiskanen banks one, then the flood

Miro Heiskanen opened it at 18:51 of the first. The NHL recap said Askarov thought he had Jamie Benn's shot, Roope Hintz knocked the rebound off the end boards, and Heiskanen banked a backhand off Dmitry Orlov and Askarov's right pad. Heiskanen told NHL.com he knew the goalie wasn't ready. 1-0.

Joel Kiviranta made it 2-0 at 3:17 of the second, banking another puck from below the goal line off Askarov's pad. The NHL recap said Oskar Back's shot deflected off Jacob Trouba, and Kiviranta sent it back toward the crease. Kiviranta is not seeded on AthX.

Benn jammed one near the left post at 6:19. Jason Robertson sent him a touch pass between the legs from below the goal line, the NHL recap said. Glen Gulutzan called that little play a big thing: two players reading each other. 3-0.

Robertson made it 4-0 at 16:30, a wrist shot blocker side from the slot after he gloved Sam Dickinson's clearing attempt at the right point.

Rantanen's first, Celebrini in the room

Mikko Rantanen closed it at 15:22 of the third from the left circle. First goals of the season for Benn, Robertson, and Rantanen, the NHL recap said. Hintz finished with two assists.

Ty Dellandrea drew in for Celebrini and was minus-2 in 14:20, the NHL recap said. He is not seeded. Darnell Nurse told NHL.com the bounces were odd. Warsofsky said the first 10 minutes were fine, then San Jose could not get traction, especially after early penalties.

Oettinger, per the NHL recap: volume is not going to be as high, quality over quantity. Thirteen saves and a zero in the goals-against column is still a shutout.

Benn finished plus-2 with four shots in 14:20. Robertson was plus-3 with four shots in 17:46. Rantanen had three shots and two blocks in 17:34. Hintz won 8 of 11 faceoffs. Heiskanen was plus-3 in 20:37. Thomas Harley was plus-3 in 21:31. Casey DeSmith did not play.

San Jose managed 13 shots. Tyler Toffoli had three. Darnell Nurse had three and three blocks. Zach Ostapchuk blocked four. Will Smith was minus-3 in 18:28. Mason Marchment had six hits. Kailer Sherwood had seven. Celebrini had five assists through two games, tied with Joe Thornton and Vincent Damphousse for the most after two games in Sharks history, the NHL On Tap notes said. He did not add a sixth.

The Sharks visit St. Louis on Thursday. Dallas visits Buffalo that night.

Fantasy points measure the box. Price is what traders will pay for Oettinger after the first shutout of the year, and for Celebrini after a scratch that Warsofsky would not pin to a timetable. They are not the same number.
