Senators 4, Bruins 1: Stützle Twice in the First at the Garden

October 5, 2026 - Boston - Tim Stützle scored twice in 1:43, and TD Garden was already 2-0 Ottawa before the first period had found a rhythm. The NHL recap called the first one short-handed: Michael Amadio intercepted a Bruins pass, and Stützle one-timed a backhand feed high stick side on Jeremy Swayman.

The Ottawa Senators beat the Boston Bruins 4-1. Ottawa is 2-0-0. Boston is 2-2-0 after two straight losses. Shots were 24-19 Ottawa. Boston went 0-for-4 on the power play and is 0-for-10 through four games, the NHL recap said. Attendance was 17,850.

Linus Ullmark stopped all 10 shots through two periods, then sat for the third. The NHL recap said JJ Peterka crashed into him at 4:25 of the second, and Ottawa coach Travis Green called the change precautionary. Samuel Ersson made eight saves in his Senators debut after the June 26 trade from Toronto, the NHL recap said. Swayman stopped 20 of 24.

Two in 1:43, then a breakaway

Stützle made it 1-0 at 7:39. The NHL recap said Boston mismanaged the puck in the offensive zone. Amadio created the 2-on-1. The NHL box does not tag that goal as short-handed. The NHL recap and David Pastrnak both called it that way. Pastrnak, per the NHL recap: "Tough first period. Can't give away two short-handed."

Stützle scored again at 9:22, three seconds after the same Boston power play expired, the NHL recap said. He stole a pass, broke in, fanned on the first attempt, then beat Swayman short side. 2-0. The AP recap on ESPN framed the second as a 2-on-1 after the kill.

Drake Batherson made it 3-0 at 1:06 of the second. Stützle forced a turnover in his own zone and sent Batherson in. The NHL recap called it a breakaway backhand.

Amadio finished it at 5:19, a one-timer in the low slot off Shane Pinto's no-look feed after a failed Bruins breakout. 4-0. Marco Sturm called timeout at 14:41 of the second, the AP recap said.

Hagens, then a quiet Garden

James Hagens scored his second NHL goal at 3:30 of the third, unassisted. The NHL recap said Ersson misplayed a puck in the corner, Hagens passed for Matthew Poitras, and the puck went in off a sliding Ersson. 4-1. Hagens is not seeded on AthX.

Pastrnak finished with two shots in 21:00 and no points. Elias Lindholm had two shots. Morgan Geekie had three. Nikita Zadorov took 12 PIM. The NHL recap quoted him: "We dropped the ball at home today." Boston captain Pastrnak, on the power play, told the NHL recap the group has to find confidence.

Claude Giroux played 14:03. Thomas Chabot played 24:13. Jordan Spence played 24:49 with two blocks. Tyler Kleven was plus-2 in 23:21. Nick Cousins took 10 PIM. Warren Foegele was plus-2.

Boston's top line did not dent the scoresheet. Pastrnak, Elias Lindholm, and Morgan Geekie combined for seven shots and three minuses of two. Mason Lohrei blocked two in 21:01. Tanner Jeannot had six hits and 10 PIM. The NHL recap said Stützle became the fourth German player to reach 150 goals, joining Leon Draisaitl, Sturm, and Jochen Hecht. Ullmark is the first Senators goalie to win the club's first two games of a season since Craig Anderson in 2016-17, the same notes said.

Ridly Greig served the second of a two-game suspension. Charlie McAvoy served the fourth of a six-game suspension. Jake Sanderson did not play. The NHL On Tap notes said he reaggravated an injury against Toronto.

Ottawa visits Detroit on Tuesday, a back-to-back. Boston hosts Utah on Thursday.

AthX Engine on a 4-1 road night

AthX Engine (our projection and scoring system) scored Stützle at 12.80 from the NHL box: two goals, one assist, three shots, one block. The box did not add the short-handed bonus. Amadio is 8.20. Batherson is 5.70. Ullmark is 9.00 (win, 10 saves, no goals against in 40 minutes; the Engine's shutout flag follows that line, even with Ersson allowing one later). Ersson is 2.00. Swayman is 3.20.

Ottawa's team line is 19.80. Boston's regulation loss floors at 0.00.

Fantasy points measure the box. Price is what traders will pay for Stützle after 413 career points, which the AP recap said moved him into sole possession of sixth in Senators history. They are not the same number.
