Seahawks 9, Chiefs 9: Preseason Ends Even

August 28, 2026 - Kansas City - Jason Myers had 52 yards and no time. The kick went wide right. The Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs walked off 9-9.

Both clubs finished 0-2-1. Kansas City closed a third straight winless preseason and scored one touchdown in exhibition play, per ESPN.

Sam Darnold sat again. Patrick Mahomes sat again. The night belonged to Jalen Milroe and Garrett Nussmeier.

Field goals, a 4-yard score, and a stuffed goal line

Myers hit from 46 midway through the first quarter. Brashard Smith returned the kickoff 57 yards. Harrison Butker answered from 28 after a holding penalty stalled Kansas City in the red zone.

The Chiefs reached first-and-goal on the next drive and settled for Butker from 24. 6-3 Kansas City. Butker later missed from 58 in the third.

Milroe found Nick Vannett from 4 yards. Myers missed the extra point. 9-6 Seattle. Nussmeier went 22 of 34 for 198 yards with an interception. Milroe went 16 of 26 for 223 yards and the touchdown.

Early in the fourth, an unnecessary-roughness penalty set up first-and-goal at the Seattle 4, per the Seahawks. Smith got stuffed on three straight carries. Jalen Gaines tackled him for no gain on third-and-1. Butker tied it from 19.

Mike Macdonald said going for the touchdown on the last drive was not part of the calculus. Seattle downshifted after reaching Kansas City territory inside two minutes. "We've got to give him a better (chance to get a) kick off," Macdonald said of Myers.

Chiefs linebacker R. Mason Thomas had a strip sack and recovery. He thought the miss meant overtime. "But it was nice to get a tie," he said.

Starters on ice, Week 1 already on the clock

Neither club played its starting quarterback in the preseason. Mahomes is coming back from December left-knee surgery. Andy Reid said before the game that Justin Fields was also unlikely to play. Nussmeier, a seventh-rounder, took the snaps.

Kenneth Walker III, Kansas City's projected starter and last season's Super Bowl MVP in Seattle, had 4 yards on 2 preseason carries, per ESPN. Seattle's Zach Charbonnet and rookie Jadarian Price missed the preseason with injuries.

The Seahawks said Trevon Diggs intercepted Nussmeier for Seattle's only takeaway. The Seattle Times wrote that Diggs missed a tackle on Travis Kelce in the open field. Chiefs corner Melvin Smith left with a rib injury in the first quarter and did not return.

Seattle opens at home Sept. 9 against New England, a Super Bowl rematch. Kansas City hosts Denver on Monday night Sept. 14. The clubs meet again in Seattle on Oct. 25. Macdonald said his staff will not use this tape for that game.
