Rockies 9, Angels 8: Goodman Homers in Five-Run Eighth, Rumfield Wins It in Ninth

The lead

June 1, 2026 - Anaheim - TJ Rumfield hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the ninth, Hunter Goodman launched a three-run homer in a five-run eighth, and the Colorado Rockies rallied past the Los Angeles Angels 9-8, per the Associated Press recap on CBS Sports.

Jake McCarthy homered earlier and doubled in the ninth to set up the winning run. Colorado has won more games this season (23) than it did before the All-Star break in 2025.

How the game turned

McCarthy's solo homer in the third gave Colorado a 2-0 lead. Jose Siri's second career grand slam and Jo Adell's RBI single powered a five-run third for the Angels—6-3 after Vaughn Grissom scored on a Goodman throwing error in the fifth.

Kyle Karros doubled home a run to start the eighth rally. Tyler Freeman singled in a run before Goodman's 14th homer—a three-run drive over the left-field wall—put Colorado ahead 8-6. Jorge Soler tied it with a two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth.

McCarthy doubled to move Karros to third in the ninth, and Rumfield's sac fly to right off Kirby Yates (0-1) made it 9-8.

Pitching and matchup notes

Antonio Senzatela (5-0) earned the win with 1 2/3 scoreless relief innings. Kyle Freeland allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.

José Soriano struck out seven over 4 2/3 innings for the Angels but walked seven—a career high and the most by an Angels pitcher since Garrett Richards in 2013. Yates gave up the decisive run in the ninth.

Bats that changed the board

Goodman drove in three runs. McCarthy finished 2-for-4 with a homer, double, and two walks—10 hitting FP in AthX Engine scoring. Soler went 3-for-5 with a two-run triple for the Angels.

AthX Engine fantasy angle

AthX Engine graded Colorado at 13 team FP on a night when both clubs scored eight or more—late-inning leverage and power spikes matter more than the final margin in daily scoring. That profile differs from trader-driven dynamic pricing.

What comes next

Tomoyuki Sugano (4-4) starts for Colorado against Grayson Rodriguez (2-1) on Tuesday, per AP.
