Rockies 8, Royals 1: Freeland's First Complete Game Caps a Sweep

Nine innings in 99-degree heat

August 2, 2026 – Denver – Kyle Freeland had allowed 19 earned runs in his previous four starts. On Sunday he finished the game himself.

Nine innings. One run. Eight strikeouts. First complete game of his career. First complete game for the Rockies since 2022. The Colorado Rockies beat the Kansas City Royals 8-1 and swept the three-game set.

It was 99 degrees at first pitch, the second-hottest home game in franchise history. Freeland still went the distance.

McCarthy and the series math

Jake McCarthy hit a three-run homer, his 11th of the year. He has 34 RBI in his last 26 games. Brett Sullivan doubled twice and drove in two. Rookie Cole Carrigg matched a career high with three hits.

Seth Lugo lasted five innings with five earned runs and five walks. Kansas City put only two runners on base after the third. Luke Maile drove in the Royals' only run.

Colorado outscored Kansas City 23-8 in the series. The Royals have been swept nine times this season, most in the majors. They have lost five of six.

Freeland improved to 3-10. The win was only his second in his last 18 starts. That is the kind of line that can turn a bad month into a footnote if the next few turns look like this one.
