October 26, 2026 - Edmonton - Michal Postava had never started an NHL game. With 1:17 left, Detroit had him on the bench. Lucas Raymond put a pass off Dylan Larkin's skates. Larkin kicked it up, slipped it between Tristan Jarry's pads, and Rogers Place had 3-3. In the shootout, Raymond scored the only goal. Postava stopped three. The kid who told NHL.com he felt like a kid had a win.
The Detroit Red Wings beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 in a shootout. Detroit is 5-4-3, 2-1-1 on a four-game trip after a 4-1 loss in Calgary on Saturday. Edmonton is 8-2-2, two straight losses (0-1-1). Shots were 29-28 Detroit. Attendance was 17,043. Postava, Jarry, Colton Dach, Isaac Howard, Ryan Shea, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Carter Mazur, and Andreas Englund are not seeded on AthX player pages, so those names stay unlinked. Zach Hyman is not seeded either.
Viktor Arvidsson had a goal and an assist. Raymond had two assists in regulation and the shootout winner. Larkin scored the 6-on-5 equalizer. Emmitt Finnie scored. Postava stopped 25 of 28 in 63:16, then three more in the shootout. Vasily Podkolzin scored. Dach had a goal and an assist. Howard scored. Connor McDavid had an assist. Jarry stopped 26 of 29.
Three one-goal leads that did not last
Podkolzin opened it at 6:10. Leon Draisaitl's centering pass bounced in the slot, hit Podkolzin's skate, then Mazur's skate, and went in. McDavid had the other assist. His season-opening point streak is 12 games. The NHL recap put him at 34 points (eight goals, 26 assists) and said he matched the longest season-opening assist streak in NHL history (Sebastian Aho, Ken Linseman, Wayne Gretzky).
Arvidsson tied it at 8:35 of the second on the power play. Raymond found him across the ice. One-timer past Jarry's stick. Alex DeBrincat had the other assist. The Oilers site timed Arvidsson at 11:25. The NHL landing and NHL.com recap are 8:35. We used 8:35.
Hyman left at 7:36 of the second after Englund hit him and his head hit the glass. He did not return. Edmonton coach Mike Babcock told NHL.com Hyman was injured before, and twice is not a good sign.
Howard made it 2-1 at 4:18 of the third on the power play, a one-timer from Kasperi Kapanen over a sprawling Postava. First goal since Oct. 28, 2025, the NHL recap said. Finnie tied it 30 seconds later. Arvidsson dug it out behind the net. Finnie put it past Jarry's right pad. 2-2.
Dach tipped Shea's point shot at 16:32. Video confirmed it was not a high stick. 3-2. Shea told NHL.com they give up too much in the second, whether it is bad changes or not getting to spots.
Larkin tied it at 18:43, extra attacker on. The NHL recap listed 18:34. The NHL landing is 18:43. Moritz Seider had the other assist. Babcock told NHL.com an extra Detroit player hit an Oilers stick, the puck went right to Larkin, and they could not get it cleared.
Nine seconds, then Raymond
Overtime stayed 3-3. Postava stopped Evan Bouchard from the slot with nine seconds left, the NHL recap said.
Shootout: McDavid wrist, save. Raymond wrist, goal. Draisaitl backhand, save. DeBrincat backhand, save. Nugent-Hopkins wrist, save. Detroit 4-3.
Postava told NHL.com he watched those games when he was young and did not expect to be in the net and win. He wanted to enjoy it and help the guys. Red Wings coach Todd McLellan told NHL.com he was proud of the group after Calgary, they checked well, and sometimes a goalie gets a start like this and plays well. Arvidsson told NHL.com they played as a five-man unit, and Posty was unbelievable.
The NHL recap said Postava is the third Red Wings goaltender in 25 years to win his first NHL start, after Petr Mrazek (Feb. 7, 2013) and Jimmy Howard (Nov. 28, 2005). Draisaitl's six-game goal streak (nine goals) ended. His point streak is seven games (nine goals, six assists) on the NHL.com recap. The Oilers game story had that point streak at nine. We used the NHL.com recap.
