Red Sox 6, Yankees 0: Bennett Blanks the Bronx in Game 1

Abreu went deep. Bennett never needed more than that.

August 29, 2026 - Bronx - This was the June 6 makeup, Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader, 1:05 p.m. at Yankee Stadium. Wilyer Abreu homered in the first, 387 feet to right-center, his 23rd. Jake Bennett took that 1-0 lead and threw six innings, three hits, no walks, seven strikeouts, 83 pitches.

The Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees 6-0. Bennett improved to 9-6. Carlos Rodón (4-3) lasted 4 2/3, two runs, Abreu's homer the loud one.

Boston pulled back within two games of New York for the AL's top wild-card slot. For a few hours. Game 2 still had to be played.

A passed ball, then a four-run ninth

Rodón retired 13 of the first 14 hitters after the homer. Bennett was cleaner. He needed 11 pitches in the fifth and eight in the sixth. He has allowed one run and six hits in 12 1/3 innings across two career starts against New York.

The second run came without a hit that scored anyone. Adley Rutschman reached. Nick Sogard singled him to third. Ali Sánchez's passed ball let Rutschman score. 2-0.

Ceddanne Rafaela had misjudged a fly in the fourth, then threw a runner out at the plate on a relay. In the ninth he singled home Sogard. Caleb Durbin walked. Rutschman singled. Andruw Monasterio singled both home. Sogard doubled Monasterio in. Rafaela's single made it 6-0. Ryan Yarbrough allowed all four of those ninth-inning runs.

Tyron Guerrero and Garrett Whitlock each threw a scoreless inning. Jovani Morán finished the shutout. New York managed four hits all afternoon. Attendance: 47,314.
