Rays 8, Angels 5: Díaz Homers Twice in Seven-Run Seventh at St. Pete

The lead

May 29, 2026 - St. Petersburg - Yandy Díaz homered twice, including back-to-back shots with Jonathan Aranda in a seven-run seventh, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Los Angeles Angels 8-5 to snap a four-game losing streak, per the Associated Press recap on CBS Sports.

Tampa Bay became the first MLB team with 20 home wins in 2026. Nick Martinez (5-1) allowed two runs in seven innings—his 11th straight start with two earned runs or fewer.

How the game turned

Díaz led off with a homer off Walbert Ureña for 1-0. The Angels tied it 2-2 on Zach Neto and Mike Trout RBI hits in the fifth. Díaz's two-run shot off Ryan Zeferjahn (2-3) in the seventh made it 3-2.

A Vaughn Grissom error at first extended the rally. Oliver Dunn's bunt single, Richie Palacios' two-run triple, and Nick Fortes' sacrifice bunt pushed the lead to 8-2. Trout walked twice and scored three runs; Grissom doubled home a run in the eighth.

Bryan Baker walked Trout with the bases loaded in the ninth before popping up Grissom for his 15th save.

Pitching and matchup notes

Ureña allowed one run in six innings. Zeferjahn and Brent Suter were tagged for seven runs—five earned—in the final two frames.

Bats that changed the board

The Rays' seventh was a bingo card of homers, walks, errors, bunts, and triples, per Yahoo Sports. An 8-2 lead nearly became tense again before Baker escaped a bases-loaded jam.
