Rays 4, Yankees 3: Mesa's Sixth and a Fan Interference Call Closed the Sweep

Mesa stared into the dugout. Then the wall got a review.

October 7, 2026 - Bronx - Junior Caminero had already singled in the sixth. Victor Mesa Jr. then sent a sweeper from Max Fried into the right-field seats, the Associated Press recap on ESPN said, and backed out of the box while looking into the Tampa Bay Rays dugout. 4-2.

The Rays beat the New York Yankees 4-3 in American League Division Series Game 3 and swept the series. It was Tampa Bay's first sweep in a best-of-five (or longer) postseason series, the MLB recap said. It was only New York's second such sweep, with the 1980 ALCS. Game 1 of the ALCS is Monday at Tropicana Field against the winner of Guardians-White Sox.

Clear. 64 degrees. Wind 9 mph, right to left. First pitch 8:09 p.m. ET. Attendance 48,865. The game lasted 3 hours, 4 minutes. Nick Martinez told MLB.com Cashy had said there were two more bites on the bone. Wednesday was the first of those bites. Eight wins remain if they want the last one.

Aranda's single. Vilade's porch. Jones's answer.

Jonathan Aranda singled Jonny DeLuca home in the third. Taylor Walls was thrown out at the plate on the relay from Spencer Jones to first to short to Austin Wells. 1-0. Ben Rice singled Jones home in the bottom half. 1-1. Rice's eighth RBI of the postseason, ESPN said.

Ryan Vilade then dropped a 340-foot fly just over Jones's glove and into the right-field short porch in the fourth. The AP recap said it would not have been out of any other big league ballpark. It was Vilade's postseason debut. 2-1.

Anthony Volpe, starting at second with Jazz Chisholm Jr. out of the lineup, ripped a 96.6 mph liner off Martinez's back for an infield single. Ian Seymour took over. Jones doubled the other way beyond Mesa and scored Volpe. 2-2. Martinez's night: 3 2/3 innings, five hits, two earned, one walk, three strikeouts. Seymour threw 1 1/3 scoreless for the win.

The fan. The ABS. Jax still got Jones.

Mesa's homer chased Fried. Fried went 5 2/3: seven hits, four earned, no walks, seven strikeouts, two homers, the loss. Then the sixth tried to give New York the inning back.

George Lombard Jr. walked when a 3-1 pitch called a strike by Dan Bellino was ruled inside on an ABS challenge, ESPN said. Wells walked on a full-count changeup, then Liam Hicks challenged. The pitch caught the inside corner. Strikeout. Volpe then appeared to hit a two-run homer off Griffin Jax. A fan reached over the left-field wall and caught the ball over a leaping Mesa.

Replay said the ball would not have gone out and would not have been caught. Volpe was given an RBI double. Lombard scored. 4-3. Jax struck out Jones. The AP recap put Jeffrey Maier next to that paragraph and left it there. Video for home-run calls has existed since 2008. Ball-strike challenges started this year. Wednesday used both in one inning.

Jax threw two innings: one hit, one earned, one walk, four strikeouts, a hold. Cam Booser and Kevin Kelly finished the eighth. Kelly struck out pinch-hitter Giancarlo Stanton with a runner on. Bryan Baker threw the ninth for his third save of the series: one walk, two strikeouts. Baker told MLB.com they knew what they were up against after a week off.

A $91 million club on a $303 million field.

New York opened the season with MLB's third-highest payroll at $303 million, ESPN said. Tampa Bay sat 26th at $91 million. The Rays celebrated on this field for the second time in two weeks after clinching the AL East here on Sept. 22. Martinez was shirtless and soaked in the clubhouse, the MLB recap said. Cash showed up to the press conference on his second shirt and second hat.

Aaron Judge missed the postseason after a calf strain on Sept. 16. He had played seven games after May 31 because of a fractured rib and the leg, the AP recap said. New York never led in the series. The Yankees have not advanced past a higher-seeded team since 2020. This was their 17th straight season without a World Series title, matching the gap between 1978 and 1996.

Tampa Bay's last postseason series win was the 2020 ALCS. The MLB recap noted the club went to the World Series both times it got past the ALDS, in 2008 and 2020. Four more wins put them in a third Fall Classic. Cash told MLB.com the message does not change. Keep doing what they are doing.

Vilade told MLB.com he loves popping bottles and that the team is not done. The Rays get four days off, ESPN said, and will have played three games in 14 days before the ALCS. The Yankees are done. The review in left field made sure of the last run that did not happen.

AthX Engine after the baseball

AthX Engine (our projection and scoring system) put Tampa Bay at 8 team fantasy points on a 4-3. Jax had 11 pitching FP. Baker had 9. Seymour had 6.33. Vilade had 6 hitting FP. Mesa had 5. New York sat at 1. Those numbers are the sweep: a win, four runs, three against, two homers, and a bullpen that closed Yankee Stadium.

Fantasy points measure the night under platform scoring rules. Share prices also move with traders through dynamic pricing. They are related. They are not the same number.
