Pirates 14, Brewers 5: Ten-Run Fourth, Skenes Sweeps Milwaukee Into the Break

Ten in the fourth, sweep in the books

July 12, 2026 – Pittsburgh – The matchup lost a little shine when Milwaukee scratched Jacob Misiorowski on Saturday with arm fatigue — both aces were All-Stars, both skipped pitching in Philadelphia — but Paul Skenes still had a statement to make.

The Pittsburgh Pirates routed the Milwaukee Brewers 14-5 at PNC Park, scoring 10 runs in the fourth inning to finish a three-game sweep into the All-Star break, per the Associated Press recap on CBS Sports.

Skenes had gone 0-6 across nine starts before beating Atlanta on Tuesday — and Pittsburgh lost all nine of those games. Sunday was different. Win No. 2 in a row. Sweep secured. Break earned.

Four in the second, then the inning that broke Milwaukee

Pittsburgh put up four in the second and carried a 4-2 lead into the fourth. Then the bottom fell out for the Brewers.

Milwaukee starter Robert Gasser didn't survive the frame. The Pirates scored seven runs before making an out — Marcell Ozuna homered, Henry Davis singled in a run, Jared Koenig hit Bryan Reynolds with the bases loaded, walked Esmerlyn Valdez to force another, and Ryan O'Hearn singled home a run to make it 9-2.

Nick Gonzales greeted Grant Anderson with a two-run double. Jared Triolo added a two-run single. A video review reversed what looked like an inning-ending double play, and Jake Mangum tripled home another. Fifteen hits total for Pittsburgh. The kind of inning that empties a bullpen phone and fills a highlight reel.

Brice Turang hit a two-run homer in a three-run eighth for Milwaukee, but by then the day was long gone.

Skenes finally looks like Skenes again

Skenes (8-8) worked 5 1/3 innings, allowed two runs and three hits, walked one, and struck out seven — four of his final five batters went down on strikes. He'd tossed three perfect innings before back-to-back doubles from Christian Yelich and Jackson Chourio started the fourth; Gary Sánchez's forceout was the only damage that frame.

That's the version Pittsburgh waited through a nine-start drought to see again — not perfect, but in control, and backed by an offense that finally exploded with him on the mound.

O'Hearn and the Sunday leaderboard

Ryan O'Hearn finished 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs in the middle of that fourth-inning chaos — 9 hitting FP on AthX Engine, pacing a lineup that turned a close game into a rout.

AthX Engine graded the Pirates at 26 team FP, the highest total on the Sunday card — Skenes at 16.3 pitching FP, O'Hearn at 9 hitting FP, and a 10-run inning that made the team board feel like a one-club race. That daily scoring lives beside, not inside, dynamic pricing.

Both teams exhale

Milwaukee heads home to host Miami after the break. Pittsburgh opens at Cleveland. For one club, it's a sweep to forget the first half's headaches. For the other, it's five runs and a long flight into the off days.
