Padres 8, Marlins 2: France's Three-Run Shot Ties San Diego for the Top Wild Card

A 1-0 hole, a warehouse homer, and a three-way tie at 85-69

September 18, 2026 - San Diego - Agustín Ramírez homered to left in the third at Petco Park, his fifth, and the Miami Marlins led 1-0. The Cubs had already lost in Cincinnati. The Phillies had already lost in Queens. First pitch in San Diego arrived with a door open.

The San Diego Padres walked through it. They scored six in the fifth and won 8-2. They are 85-69, tied with Philadelphia and Chicago for the three National League wild cards. The ESPN recap said Miami was eliminated.

Clear. 73 degrees. Wind 9 mph left to right. First pitch 6:41 p.m. Attendance 42,765. The game lasted 2 hours, 46 minutes. San Diego had 12 hits. Miami had 10 and scored two.

Tatis, Harris, then France found the brick

Tyler Phillips had thrown 3 2/3 scoreless. Cade Gibson (5-2) came in for the fifth and did not get out of it. Xander Bogaerts was on. Jake Cronenworth was on. Samad Taylor was on. Fernando Tatis Jr. singled to right, Bogaerts scoring. 1-1. Dustin Harris singled through the middle, the MLB recap said the ball bounced off the mound, and Cronenworth and Taylor scored. 3-1.

Tyler Zuber inherited Tatis and Harris with two outs. Ty France hit the first pitch off the balcony on the third level of the Western Metal Supply Co. warehouse in the left-field corner. Tatis scored. Harris scored. 6-1. The ESPN recap said France paused, tossed the bat, and started the trot. It was his 21st, a career high. The same recap noted he signed a minor-league deal in the spring, played at San Diego State for Tony Gwynn, and is in his second stint with the Padres.

Nick Pivetta (3-2) had already done the quiet half. Five innings. Four hits. One run. One walk. Four strikeouts. Seventy-six pitches. Ramírez's homer was the mistake. Wandy Peralta, David Morgan, Adrian Morejon, and Griffin Canning finished the last four innings. Morgan allowed Javier Sanoja's RBI single in the eighth, Otto Lopez scoring. 6-2. That was Miami's last run.

Jackson Merrill homered to right in the bottom of the eighth, his 26th. The MLB recap said he kissed the barrel before he flipped it. 7-2. Taylor singled Bogaerts home. 8-2. Merrill's ball was the exclamation. France's was the game.

Eleven of 12, and the standings finally look like October

San Diego has won 11 of 12. The MLB recap said the Padres now lead Arizona by five for the last wild card and can clinch a playoff spot as soon as Sunday. A week ago the two NL West clubs were tied. Friday the Yankees hung five on the Diamondbacks in the first inning in Phoenix, and San Diego did the rest at home.

The tie at 85-69 is not a hosting tie. The ESPN recap said the Padres would lose tiebreakers to the Cubs and Phillies in a race for the No. 1 wild card and a home opening round. Chicago beat San Diego in the wild-card round last year. That is the number that still sits under the 8-2. Getting in is the first job. Hosting is the one the recap said is now reasonable to talk about.

France went 2-for-4 with the homer and three RBI. Harris went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a steal. Taylor had two hits, a walk, an RBI, and a run. Bogaerts doubled, singled, and scored twice. Cronenworth had two hits, a walk, and a run. Tatis drove in the first run of the fifth. That is a six-run inning built on singles until the warehouse ball.

Ramírez finished 3-for-4 with the homer. Sanoja had two hits and the eighth-inning RBI. Lopez doubled and scored. The Marlins put 10 hits on the board and still left Petco as a club whose season is over.

A warehouse night with a clinch weekend coming

Saturday the series continues. Sunday is the first date the MLB recap listed for a possible clinch. Arizona is five back. Philadelphia and Chicago are even with San Diego and both lost Friday. The Padres did not waste that.

France is the local footnote and the swing. A minor-league deal in March. A 21st homer in September off the brick. That is a 6-1 fifth. The rest of the week is whether 85-69 becomes a home October or a road one.
