Padres 6, Giants 5: Cronenworth Walk-Off After Basabe's Late Double

Basabe tied it. Cronenworth ended it.

August 1, 2026 – San Diego – Mason Miller had already struck out the pinch-hitter with the bases loaded. The Padres still led 5-3. One more out and Petco could exhale.

Osleivis Basabe had other plans.

The late fill-in for scratched batting leader Luis Arraez drove a 103-mph fastball to the wall in left for a two-run double. Tie game. Ninth inning required. Xander Bogaerts doubled to lead it off, moved up on a sacrifice, watched Fernando Tatis Jr. take an intentional walk, and scored on Jake Cronenworth's single to center. The San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 6-5 for their seventh win in eight games.

Arraez scratched. Basabe wrote both halves of the chaos.

Arraez left Friday's game with cramps and was scratched minutes before Saturday as a precaution. He leads the majors at .328 and sits near the top of every deadline rumor board. Basabe, called up Tuesday after Casey Schmitt hit the injured list, started at second and batted ninth.

He homered off Walker Buehler in the third to tie the game at 2, his first homer since 2023. He doubled off Miller in the eighth to tie it at 5. Two of the biggest swings of the night belonged to a player who was not in the original lineup.

Freddy Fermin's two-run homer in the fourth had given San Diego a 3-2 lead. The Padres pushed the lead to 5-3 before Miller's first blown save and eventual win.

Miller got the win the hard way

Miller entered with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth. He struck out Grant McCray, then surrendered Basabe's double, then got Bryce Eldridge to ground out. Dylan Smith took the loss after Bogaerts's leadoff double in the ninth. Cronenworth finished the sequence San Diego needed.

One night after a 7-0 shutout, the Padres won a one-run game that refused to stay simple. That is how wild-card clubs stack seven of eight: different shape, same result.
