Padres 11, Brewers 2: Rengifo's Grand Slam Against His Old Club

August 11, 2026 - San Diego - Two months ago Milwaukee designated Luis Rengifo for assignment and released him a week later. On Tuesday he came back with the first grand slam of his career, an opposite-field shot in the second that put the San Diego Padres up 5-0 against the team with the best record in baseball.

The Padres kept scoring. Milwaukee never caught up. San Diego won 11-2, took the series from the Milwaukee Brewers, and moved into a three-way tie for the final two National League wild-card spots with 41 games left.

Five in the second, then the pile-on

Rengifo's slam off Kyle Harrison was the night in one swing. Harrison lasted 4 2/3 innings, gave up eight earned on 10 hits, and turned a matchup between a first-place club and a surging wild-card hunter into a rout before the middle of the game.

San Diego scored five in the second, one in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth. Seventeen hits. Zero errors. Fernando Tatis Jr. homered and moved into sole possession of second place on the Padres' all-time home run list. Luis Campusano went deep with three RBI. Manny Machado had three hits. Austin Hays, a recent pickup, had two.

This is the lineup San Diego kept insisting would show up. Stars, role players, and new faces all hitting in the same week after taking a series from Houston and now demolishing the Brewers.

Buehler held the line while the offense worked

Walker Buehler did not need to be perfect. He needed to keep a five-run second from turning into a bullpen emergency. Six innings, three hits, one earned run, five strikeouts, two walks. Win. The Padres tacked on six more runs after he left, and the relief corps barely had to sweat.

Milwaukee scored in the third and the ninth. That was it against a club that entered the night leading the NL Central by five games and the majors in wins. The Brewers finished with seven hits and two errors. A team that does almost everything right got punched in the mouth early and never found a counterpunch.

Wild-card math, finally tied

When the night ended, Arizona had lost to Colorado and Philadelphia had lost in St. Louis. San Diego's 11-2 laugher suddenly meant a three-way tie for those last two NL spots. That is not a projection. That is the standings after a Tuesday where the Padres looked like the most complete team on the field.

Rengifo said the slam did not mean extra because it came against Milwaukee. He also said things in Milwaukee did not go well early and that it is about how you finish. In 24 games with San Diego he is hitting .316 with an .869 OPS. Tuesday was the biggest swing yet.

I am not handing San Diego a playoff berth because it beat the team with the best record by nine. I am interested in whether this offense keeps hitting with length now that the wild-card picture is a dead heat.
