Packers 20, Jets 17: Smack From 26 After the Collapse

September 20, 2026 - East Rutherford - The Jets won the overtime toss and took the ball. Geno Smith was sacked on the first two snaps. False start. Third-and-30. Punt. Five plays later Trey Smack hit from 26, and the Green Bay Packers left MetLife Stadium 20-17.

The New York Jets had led 17-7 with 11:04 left. They opened 1-1. Green Bay opened 1-1 and snapped a six-game skid that included the playoffs, the AP wrote, the longest since 1990-91. It rained. The flags never stopped. Green Bay had 14 accepted penalties for 133 yards. New York had 13 for 156.

Jordan Love went 16 of 29 for 145 yards and two scores, no picks, a 91.9 rating. Smith was 27 of 41 for 247 and a 5-yard touchdown to Garrett Wilson, his first passing score as a Jet since 2016, the club wrote. It was also his 100th NFL start and his first at MetLife in a Jets uniform since 2016.

Carts, then 7-7, then 17-7

Jayden Reed went down with a neck injury on the first series. Right tackle Zach Bako-Bewele followed with a knee on the next play. Both were carted. Matt LaFleur said Reed had movement in his extremities and would stay overnight. Bako-Bewele "doesn't look good," he said, and could be out a long time.

Love still found MarShawn Lloyd from 6 at 9:35 of the second. First NFL touchdown for a 2024 third-round pick who had played one game in two seasons, the AP wrote. 7-0. Braelon Allen answered from 5. 7-7.

Smith hit Wilson from 5 with five minutes left in the third. 14-7. Early in the fourth, Kingsley Enagbare knocked the ball from Lloyd. Harrison Phillips recovered. It was the fourth fumble New York forced and the first it kept, the AP said. The drive died. Jason Sanders made 32. 17-7, 11:04 left.

Love had taken a shot to the elbow on his own fumble and said his hand went numb. He stayed in. Green Bay put the ball on the ground four times (Kaleb Johnson, Tucker Kraft, Lloyd, Love) and lost one.

Watson, Moore, then overtime

Matthew Golden drew pass interference on a deep ball, the Packers wrote. Love hit Christian Watson from 3. 17-14. Skyy Moore returned a punt 63 yards to the New York 16. Chris Brooks gained 4. The drive stalled. Smack from 34 with 2:59 left. 17-17.

Green Bay's defense stuffed fourth-and-1 at midfield. The offense went nowhere. Overtime.

Barryn Sorrell and Brandon Cisse split the first sack, the Packers wrote. Dani Dennis-Sutton and Lukas Van Ness split the second. Kenyon Sadiq caught 12. Punt. Green Bay took over at its 34.

Johnson ran for 11. Brooks caught 15, then Jarvis Brownlee Jr. hit him late. Fifteen more. Love floated one over a corner blitz to Golden for 14 to the 8. Four catches, 58 yards for Golden. LaFleur kicked. Smack from 26 at 5:23 of overtime, ESPN's scoring plays show.

Van Ness had nine tackles, 1.5 sacks, three tackles for loss, and four quarterback hits, Green Bay wrote. LaFleur called it his best game in the uniform. Love said the defense started overtime the only way you can.

A 10-point lead that did not travel

Aaron Glenn said he was highly upset. Smith said they had opportunities to close and did not capitalize. The Jets ran 27 times for 67 yards after Breece Hall had gone over 100 in Tennessee. Hall ran 16 times for 29 and caught five for 63, including a 43-yarder. Adonai Mitchell had six for 63. Isaiah Williams had six for 34. Wilson caught five for 57 and the score.

Smith was sacked four times and hit 10 times, the Jets wrote. Marcelino McCrary-Ball (ankle), Kiko Mauigoa (quad), and David Onyemata (groin) were out after halftime. Mason Taylor hurt a thumb in the fourth.

Green Bay's line kept changing. Aaron Banks (toe) left. Donovan Jennings (hand) left. Jager Burton finished at guard. Bo Melton had a stinger. Anthony Campbell hurt an ankle. The next game was Thursday night against Atlanta, four days later. LaFleur said 1-1 beats 0-2. Love called it a win they needed after Minnesota.

The Packers had two chances to win in regulation after Moore's return and after the fourth-down stop. They converted neither. Overtime was five plays and 58 yards. That was the difference between a seventh straight loss and a messy 1-1.
