Nationals 10, Phillies 4: Abrams' Extra-Inning Triple Ends a Seven-Game Skid

August 5, 2026 - Philadelphia - The rain delayed the start by 25 minutes. The bullpens kept the night honest for 10 innings. Then CJ Abrams found the gap, and the whole thing collapsed on Philadelphia.

The Washington Nationals snapped a seven-game skid with a 10-4 win in 11 innings over the Philadelphia Phillies, scoring six times in the 11th and turning a tense extra-inning scrap into a late-night rout.

Ten innings of tension, then the flood

Luis Arraez, in his second game as a Phillie after a deadline deal from San Francisco, led off the second with a homer off the right-field foul pole. Brady House answered for Washington with a homer of his own. The game stayed within a run for long stretches, the kind of midweek NL East fight that lives on baserunning and bullpen decisions more than highlight reels.

Washington took a 4-3 lead in the 10th without a hit against José Alvarado, the automatic-runner chaos doing its job. Trea Turner's sacrifice fly tied it in the bottom half off Clayton Beeter (4-3). Citizens Bank Park was set up for another inning of nervous baseball.

Then the 11th happened.

Abrams finds the wall, Mikolas finds the plate

Jacob Young walked to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Abrams drove an 0-1 knuckle curve from Caleb Kilian (3-7) to deep center. Derek Hill crashed into the outfield railing trying for a leaping catch. The ball caromed toward right, Abrams flew into third with a two-run triple, and Hill stayed down for several minutes before walking off with trainers. Interim manager Don Mattingly later said Hill had a shoulder contusion, with trainers still checking everything.

That was only the start of the six-run frame. Miles Mikolas, Thursday's scheduled starter, entered as a pinch-hitter and dropped down a bunt. Abrams beat the throw home with a headfirst slide to make it 7-4. It was Mikolas' first plate appearance since 2021, and excluding Shohei Ohtani, he became the third major-league pitcher since the universal DH to drive in a run.

The rest of the inning piled on. A night that had been about bullpen chess turned into a scoreboard that looked like a different game entirely.

Painters and pressure points

Phillies starter Andrew Painter left after four innings with left hamstring tightness after allowing one run on three hits with four strikeouts. Kilian, acquired with Arraez from the Giants on Monday, absorbed the 11th-inning damage. Philadelphia's four-game winning streak ended on a night when the bullpen had already stretched deep.

For Washington, the win mattered less for the wild-card math than for the feeling of finally ending a skid that had been stacking losses without answers. Beeter got the win. The lineup that had been quiet for a week finally hit a gap and kept going.

AthX Engine angle

Washington finished with 19 AthX Engine team fantasy points, tied with Arizona for the night's top team score. Abrams led the club with 10 hitting FP on the triple and the chaos that followed. Extra-inning run totals always inflate boards; this one earned the inflation.

What it means

One 11th inning doesn't rebuild a season, but it can stop a free fall. Washington needed a night where something weird broke its way. Philadelphia needed cleaner extras and a healthier outfield wall collision. Both will play again soon. Only one group left the park with a six-run inning and a skid in the rearview.
