Marlins 8, Phillies 6: Conine Caps a Six-Run Comeback

Six runs down, with one swing still waiting

July 29, 2026 – Miami – Griffin Conine began the eighth inning on the bench. By the time he crossed home plate, a 6-0 Philadelphia lead had become a two-run Miami lead.

Kyle Stowers walked. Conine pinch-hit for Brian Navarreto and drove a changeup 424 feet to center. The two-run homer broke a 6-6 tie, completed Miami's largest comeback of the season, and sent the Miami Marlins to an 8-6 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Marlins swept the three-game series after entering it on a franchise-record 12-game losing streak. They won on a walk-off Monday, threw a shutout Tuesday, and scored eight unanswered runs Wednesday.

Philadelphia scored six before Miami answered

The Phillies took control in the third. Justin Crawford and Edmundo Sosa singled, and Bryson Stott doubled both home for a 2-0 lead.

Bryan De La Cruz added a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Then Philadelphia hit Ryan Gusto for three runs in the fifth. Trea Turner opened the inning's scoring with a 413-foot solo homer. Bryce Harper tripled Stott home, and Alec Bohm singled in Harper.

Six runs. Nine hits. Miami had one hit through four innings against Jesús Luzardo.

Gusto's final line reflected all of it. The right-hander allowed six runs on nine hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out three. When he left, Miami needed its bullpen to stop Philadelphia completely and its lineup to solve a pitcher who had allowed one run or fewer in six straight starts.

Both happened.

Hernández gave the comeback a shape

Esteury Ruiz doubled to start the bottom of the fifth and moved to third on Jakob Marsee's sacrifice bunt. Otto Lopez grounded out to short, scoring Ruiz.

One run didn't make the deficit feel small. Heriberto Hernández changed that.

Luzardo left a high changeup over the plate with two outs. Hernández drove it 416 feet to left-center for a two-run homer. In three batters, Miami had cut 6-0 to 6-3.

Luzardo recovered in the sixth, but the seventh became his undoing. Ruiz singled, stole second, and took third on a throwing error. Marsee walked. Lopez singled home Ruiz to make it 6-4 and pushed Luzardo from the game after 6 1/3 innings.

Seth Johnson inherited two runners. He got one out, walked another batter, and then left a slider up to Xavier Edwards. Edwards lined a two-run single to left. Lopez and Marsee scored, and the game was tied.

Luzardo was charged with six runs on six hits and three walks. He struck out five. His run of six starts with no more than one run allowed ended in a game Philadelphia once led by six.

Conine got one pitch and didn't miss it

The tie lasted through the top of the eighth because Tyler Zuber struck out two in a perfect inning.

Jonathan Bowlan then walked Stowers to start the bottom half. Miami manager Clayton McCullough called for Conine, who had already ended Monday's game with a walk-off single against Philadelphia.

Bowlan threw a changeup over the middle. Conine sent it over the center-field wall. Statcast estimated the homer would have cleared the fence in 29 of 30 major league parks.

It was Conine's second go-ahead pinch-hit homer in a month. He also did it against Colorado on June 29. This one finished a comeback that had begun with a groundout three innings earlier.

Philadelphia never answered. Pete Fairbanks retired the side in order in the ninth and struck out one for his 15th save. Zuber earned the win. Bowlan took the loss.

Miami's relief work made the comeback possible. Dax Fulton threw two hitless innings before Zuber and Fairbanks each retired the side without allowing a run. After Gusto allowed six runs, the bullpen gave Philadelphia no hits over the final four innings.

Three wins changed the end of a brutal month

Miami entered Monday having lost 12 straight, the longest losing streak in franchise history. The Marlins left Wednesday at 55-54 after their first three-game sweep since that skid began.

The comeback was their 21st of the season and their largest of 2026. Before Wednesday, their biggest rally had erased a four-run deficit against Washington on May 9. This time they came back from six down for only the seventh time in franchise history.

Philadelphia fell to 57-52. The Phillies had the starter, the lead, and the early offense to avoid a sweep. They still lost all three games to a club that hadn't won since July 9 when the series began.

The Phillies get Thursday off before opening a series in Baltimore. Miami goes to New York for six road games beginning with the Mets.

Conine's homer will stand as the last image from the series. The larger story took three days: Miami went from a record losing streak to a sweep, and it finished the turn by refusing to accept a six-run deficit.
