Guardians 7, Tigers 6: Rocchio's Slam and Walk-Off Complete the Rally

A rain delay, a 6-1 hole, and one shortstop

September 4, 2026 - Cleveland - The first pitch waited an hour and four minutes for rain. When it finally came, Logan Allen lasted 2 1/3 innings in his first start since July 18, Detroit scored four times before the inning ended, and the Cleveland Guardians sat in a 6-1 hole by the third.

Brayan Rocchio hit a grand slam in the fourth. He hit a walk-off homer in the ninth. Cleveland won 7-6, and the Associated Press logged him as the sixth player in MLB history to do both in the same game. The last one was Boston's Jack Clark on July 31, 1991.

That is a Friday afternoon you write down even if you already had a nightcap scheduled.

Four in the first, then Torkelson

Max Clark and Ben Malgeri each singled in two runs in the first. Gleyber Torres singled twice and scored twice in the first two innings. The Detroit Tigers piled it on before Cleveland's bullpen could even get loose.

Allen allowed five runs on six hits in those 2 1/3 innings. Slade Cecconi inherited the mess and nearly held it. Then Spencer Torkelson hit a solo homer in the third, his 21st of the season, and Progressive Field was looking at 6-1.

Detroit is 4-15 since August 14. The Tigers still looked like the better club for three innings. Clark finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base. Torres went 2-for-5. The visitors had 11 hits and left only five on base. They just stopped scoring.

The slam that tied it

Keider Montero started for Detroit and lasted four innings. He was fine until he wasn't.

Cleveland's fourth started with traffic. Travis Bazzana singled in a run. Bases still full. Rocchio sent Montero's pitch 366 feet over the fence in right. Grand slam. First of his career. Game tied, 6-6.

The Associated Press called the inning a five-run eruption. The box score agrees: five runs, the slam doing four of them. Chase DeLauter doubled twice and stole a base. Angel Genao doubled. Cleveland suddenly had 11 hits of its own and a game that no longer looked like a blowout.

Montero's line closed at six runs in four innings. Allen's was five in 2 1/3. Two starters, 11 runs allowed, and the game still needed a ninth inning to pick a winner.

Sommers, left field, and a sixth name in the book

Cleveland's bullpen did the rest of the work. Erik Sabrowski threw two scoreless. Craig Yoho added one. Cade Smith pitched the ninth and got the win, his fourth against one loss.

Drew Sommers came on for Detroit in the ninth. Rocchio led off. The ball went to left. Walk-off, 7-6. Third career walk-off homer for Rocchio. Second homer of the afternoon. Five RBI on a 2-for-4 day.

Cleveland scored six unanswered runs after that 6-1 deficit. The Guardians stayed in the final American League wild-card spot. They are 72-70. The Tigers fell to 64-77.

I am less interested in crowning Cleveland after one homestand game than I am in what Rocchio just did. A tying slam and a walk-off in the same box score is not a September coincidence. It is a shortstop deciding a doubleheader opener by himself.

Then they played another one

The nightcap went 10 innings. Foster Griffin started for Cleveland. Andrew Sears started for Detroit. Hunter Gaddis threw two scoreless innings and got the win. Kenley Jansen took the loss.

Bazzana hit a three-run homer in game two and finished the day with a 14-FP AthX Engine hitting line across both games. Rocchio added a double, a walk, and two stolen bases in the nightcap. Cleveland won 4-3 and swept the split doubleheader.
