Eagles 24, Commanders 22: Ojomo Stuffs the Shovel

September 13, 2026 - Philadelphia - Third-and-goal, a yard, 1:01 left. Jayden Daniels found Antonio Williams. Replay kept it a catch. Washington went for two. The shovel went to John Bates. Moro Ojomo met him at the line.

The Philadelphia Eagles beat the Washington Commanders 24-22. Philadelphia opened 1-0. Washington opened 0-1. Jalen Hurts threw three touchdowns. Nick Sirianni and Hurts are 6-0 in season openers since 2021, the Associated Press wrote.

Hurts finished 14 of 25 for 203 yards, three scores, no picks. He ran seven times for 46. Daniels went 18 of 34 for 164 and two scores. Washington had 295 yards and 33:20 of the clock. Philadelphia had 318. The last two points never arrived.

3-0, then 14-3 on two explosions

Drew Stevens opened from 55. 3-0 Commanders. Then Washington's next four possessions totaled 13 yards, the club wrote. The Eagles' first spark was a play-action ball to Dontayvion Wicks, the April trade from Green Bay. Sixty-four yards. Three plays later Hurts hit Dallas Goedert from 17. 7-3.

Saquon Barkley slipped two tacklers for 42 in the second quarter and put Philadelphia at the Washington 12. Hurts found Wicks from 9. 14-3. Wicks finished with two catches for 73 and that score. DeVonta Smith had three for 53. A.J. Brown is in New England now. The first half answered the wideout question with a tight end and a new No. 2.

Washington needed the 12-play, 67-yard answer the club listed. Jacory Croskey-Merritt finished from a yard. Jalen Carter blocked the extra point. 14-9 at the half. Dan Quinn later pointed at the miscues. The blocked kick was one of them.

Three three-and-outs, then Diggs, then Goedert again

Philadelphia opened the third with three punts. Sonny Styles sacked Hurts and stuffed Barkley for a 3-yard loss, Washington wrote. Odafe Oweh got Hurts on third-and-10. Hurts was sacked three times. The offense finally moved when he hit Smith for 31. Jake Elliott made 35 with 44 seconds left in the quarter. 17-9.

Daniels spun out of a sack and ran 13 on the last snap of the third. Then he hit Williams for 33 and Stefon Diggs for 10 against an all-out blitz. Diggs beat Cooper DeJean. Touchdown. Diggs jumped the goalpost. Unsportsmanlike conduct. Quinn said Washington would have gone for two. The 15-yard flag forced the extra point. 17-16.

Hurts converted third-and-18 with a 22-yard scramble. Sirianni called that the play you need. The next ball was Goedert for 43. 24-16, 6:02 left. Goedert finished with four catches for 77 and two scores.

Daniels still had time. He completed nine of his last 11, Washington wrote. Williams and Diggs moved the chains. Fourth-and-2 became Terry McLaurin for 6 and first-and-goal at the 4. Williams from a yard. 24-22. The shovel failed. Zack Baun finished with 12 tackles, the AP said. Jihaad Campbell had his first career sack.

Barkley ran 15 times for 83. Croskey-Merritt ran 16 for 63 and the 1-yarder. Daniels added five carries for 31. Washington had 132 rushing yards. It still lost by two.

First-game margins, then a Dallas trip

Sean Mannion called his first game as Hurts' coordinator. Hurts is on his fifth play-caller in five seasons, the AP noted. The early script was clean. The third quarter was not. The last scramble still decided who left 1-0.

Frankie Luvu left with a groin. Chip Okonkwo hurt a hamstring. Tyler Owens hurt an ankle. Styles still sacked Hurts and called the defense when Luvu was out, Quinn said the next day. The two-point call, Quinn still liked. He credited Ojomo.

Philadelphia visited Tennessee the next Sunday and won 24-20. Washington went to Dallas. The opener was already the template: explosives, a blocked kick, a flag on a celebration, and a stuffed shovel. Daniels told the club they shot themselves in the foot on the little things. Ojomo told the AP he got off the ball and played it free.

Diggs caught four for 55 and the 10-yarder. Williams had four for 64 and the last score. McLaurin had two for 14, including the fourth-down conversion. The receivers did enough in the last 15 minutes. The conversion did not.
