Dodgers 11, Rockies 5: Ohtani Homers Twice at Coors

August 17, 2026 - Denver - Shohei Ohtani had been waiting on Coors Field the way the Los Angeles Dodgers had been waiting on a night that did not feel like 3.4 runs per game. He went 4-for-5 with two homers. Blake Snell threw six innings. Los Angeles beat the Colorado Rockies 11-5 and finally looked like a club that remembered how to score.

The Dodgers had lost 11 of 16. Eleven runs were their most since a 12-7 win over San Diego on July 2. Coors will inflate a box score. It will not hit a 461-foot three-run shot for you, and it will not give Ohtani a 21-game hitting streak in this park by accident.

Betts starts it. Muncy ends the third.

Mookie Betts doubled Max Muncy home in the second. 1-0. The third was the inning Colorado will replay. Andy Pages singled Ohtani in. Muncy then hit one 461 feet to right, Pages and Freddie Freeman aboard. 5-0, and Snell's night had a cushion.

Snell (1-1) was making his second start since elbow surgery that cost him three months. He allowed two hits and one run in six innings, five strikeouts, three walks, 90 pitches. His scoreless streak against the Rockies reached 27 innings before Colorado scored in the third: three walks and a fielder's choice, Adael Amador coming home on Jake McCarthy's grounder. No homer. Snell walked the trouble, then left with a 7-1 lead.

Tomoyuki Sugano (12-6) lasted five innings, seven hits, seven runs, six earned. Ohtani went 2-for-3 against him with a homer. For his career against Sugano, Ohtani is 7-for-11 with four homers. That is not Coors. That is a matchup Sugano has not solved.

Two swings, then the sixth

Ohtani's first homer was a solo shot to left-center in the fifth, 428 feet. 6-1. Betts grounded Pages home. 7-1. In the sixth, Tommy Edman was on when Ohtani went to center, 452 feet, a two-run shot. 9-1. Pages singled Freeman in. 10-1. Freeman doubled Ohtani home in the eighth. 11-2.

Ohtani has now hit in 21 straight games at Coors Field: nine homers, 24 RBI, .413. Monday was the loud version. Two balls in the seats, four hits, three RBI, four runs. Pages had three hits and two RBI. Betts had three hits and two RBI. Muncy had the 461-foot exclamation point. Freeman doubled twice.

Colorado chipped. Brett Sullivan hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh, Connor Norby scoring, unearned after a fielding error. Edwin Díaz gave up three in the ninth: Adael Amador singled Willi Castro home, Ezequiel Tovar hit a sacrifice fly, Zac Veen doubled Amador home. 11-5. Troy Johnston, an infielder-outfielder, pitched a scoreless ninth for Colorado, walked one, and hit Edman. The game was already decided.

A slump that needed altitude

Los Angeles is 75-51. The 11-of-16 slide had dropped them into a fight for NL seeding after Milwaukee took the season series on Sunday. One night at Coors does not erase that. It does give Snell a second clean start after surgery and Ohtani a box score that looks like October again.

Eric Lauer starts Tuesday. Ryan Feltner goes for Colorado. The Rockies are 50-75. They will keep playing the altitude game. The Dodgers needed the version of Ohtani that does not wait for a small park. They got it. Muncy's 461-foot ball was the loudest single swing. Ohtani's two were the ones that said the slump had a night off.

I would not crown this lineup cured after one Coors card. I would take 11 runs, Snell's six innings, and a 4-for-5 from the leadoff man and call Monday what it was: the breakout they had been trying to force for two weeks.
