Diamondbacks’ Merrill Kelly Scratched With Back Tightness, Awaiting MRI Results

Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Merrill Kelly, the team’s slated Opening Day starter for 2026, was scratched from live batting practice after feeling mid-back tightness and underwent an MRI (February 21–22, 2026). Kelly had dealt with some tightness for about a week and a half; he left after roughly 10 pitches when discomfort in his left-mid back flared. The club was awaiting imaging results; manager Torey Lovullo said he appreciated Kelly being proactive rather than pushing through. Kelly was listed day-to-day pending results. The D-backs have Zac Gallen and other rotation depth if Kelly needs time off.
