Diamondbacks 12, Guardians 8: Perdomo and Carroll Spark Seven-Run Seventh

Ten batters in the seventh. Cleveland never recovered.

August 1, 2026 – Cleveland – Progressive Field had already seen a 2-0 Guardians lead and a 2-2 tie. It had not seen what Arizona did with two outs in the seventh.

Geraldo Perdomo led off the inning with a first-pitch homer. Ildemaro Vargas singled home a run. Brian McCann doubled home two. Corbin Carroll launched a three-run shot to center. The Arizona Diamondbacks sent 10 men to the plate, scored seven runs, and beat the Cleveland Guardians 12-8 for a fourth straight win.

Perdomo keeps stacking series at-bats

Perdomo finished with four hits and three RBIs, the fourth four-hit game of his career. He is 6-for-10 with four RBIs through two games of the series. Nolan Arenado added a solo homer in the eighth. McCann collected three hits. Arizona held the second National League wild-card spot and played like a club that intends to keep it.

Rhys Hoskins gave Cleveland a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run homer off rookie Kohl Drake. The Guardians tied the game in the fifth only after Arizona had already knotted it on an error and a fielder's choice. Steven Kwan finished with three hits. None of it mattered once the seventh opened.

Cleveland's five-run eighth arrived too late

Chase DeLauter homered to lead off the eighth. Kwan ripped a two-run single. Cleveland scored five and put the potential tying run at the plate with two outs. DeLauter lined out to center. The rally died one swing short of making the seven-run inning irrelevant.

Hunter Gaddis took the loss. Gerardo Carrillo earned the win with two scoreless innings in a six-pitcher Arizona night. Cleveland fell to .500 for the first time since May 10 and is 5-10 since the All-Star break.

Kelly and Williams close it out

Merrill Kelly draws Gavin Williams on Sunday. Arizona will try to leave Cleveland with a series win and a wild-card cushion. Cleveland will try to get back over .500 before the deadline finishes rearranging the rest of the league.

Perdomo started the seventh with one swing. Carroll finished the loud part with another. Ten batters later, the Guardians were chasing a game they never caught.
