Devils 7, Rangers 1: Four Goals in Five Minutes Burst the Bubble

October 15, 2026 - Newark - J.T. Miller tried to go across the ice with 30 seconds left in the first. He missed. Evan Rodrigues did not. Wrist shot, 1-0, and the first Hudson meeting of the season had a lead the New York Rangers never got back.

The New Jersey Devils beat the Rangers 7-1 at Prudential Center. New Jersey is 4-3-0, two in a row. New York is 6-3-0, a third loss in nine, the Associated Press recap said. Shots were 31-19 New Jersey. Attendance was 16,527. Rodrigues, Nico Daws, Arseny Gritsyuk, Stefan Noesen, Cody Glass, Amadeus Lombardi, Dawson Mercer, Brett Pesce, Pavel Dorofeyev, Dylan Garand, and Spencer Martin are not seeded on AthX player pages, so those names stay unlinked.

Luke Hughes scored twice, his first multi-goal NHL game, the NHL recap said. Timo Meier, Pesce, Mercer, Dougie Hamilton, and Lombardi each had two assists. Daws stopped 18 of 19. Garand stopped 9 of 13 before Martin replaced him at 4:39 of the second. Martin stopped 15 of 18.

Rodrigues at 19:30, then the five-minute burst

Rodrigues told NHL.com that Miller whiffed trying to go across the ice, and he was happy to step into it. The NHL recap put the steal at the top of the right circle. 1-0 after one.

Eighteen seconds into the second, Hughes snapped from the top of the left circle. The puck hit Adam Fox and went past Garand. Meier and Pesce on the play. 2-0. The Associated Press recap said Vladislav Gavrikov had a giveaway that started that one.

Nico Hischier jammed one from the left post at 4:08. Meier and Mercer. 3-0. The AP recap said Garand mishandled the puck. Gritsyuk scored 31 seconds later from the right circle, Jack Hughes and Hamilton, and Garand's night ended on four goals against 13 shots. Mike Sullivan had already taken a timeout. It did not slow the next shift.

The NHL recap called those four goals in 5:09 the fastest by any team this season. Hughes made it 5-0 at 16:34 from outside the right post, Pesce and Lombardi. He told NHL.com he had been dropping to Pesce a lot, sold that, and turned the corner.

Noesen, a power-play answer, then Glass short-handed

Noesen scored from the left circle at 7:01 of the third, Lombardi and Rodrigues. 6-0. Dorofeyev tipped one on the power play at 8:02 from Fox and Alexis Lafrenière. 6-1. Glass closed it short-handed at 14:54 from Mercer and Hamilton. 7-1.

Daws was perfect until that deflection, the AP recap said. It was his first win of the season, the NHL recap said, and Sheldon Keefe's 300th as an NHL coach. Keefe told NHL.com the milestone does not mean a lot. He wanted the win.

Sullivan told NHL.com they lost themselves and did not play the game that had brought them success. Fox said New Jersey got odd-man rushes and capitalized. A forgettable game. The Rangers entered with the NHL's best goal differential at plus-13, that same recap said. Igor Shesterkin is out for the season with a lower-body injury from Oct. 9, and Garand was making his third straight start.

Jack Hughes extended a point streak to five games (one goal, seven assists). Lafrenière's five-game streak ended (seven goals, three assists). Hughes became the third Devils defenseman in 10 years with a multi-goal period, joining Hamilton and Damon Severson, the NHL recap said.

AthX Engine on a 26.40 night in Newark

AthX Engine (our projection and scoring system) scored Luke Hughes at 11.00 (two goals, five shots, one block, two penalty minutes). Daws is 9.00 on the win, 18 saves, and one goal against. New Jersey's team line is 26.40. New York's regulation loss floors at 0.

Fantasy points measure the box. Price is what traders will pay for a Hughes who finally got two in a night, and for a Rangers crease that is still covering for Shesterkin. They are not the same number.

Track Luke Hughes, Hischier, Fox, and both clubs on the marketplace. New York visits Columbus on Saturday. New Jersey visits Washington the same night.
