Extra innings, same rivalry, different ending
July 30, 2026, Busch Stadium, St. Louis: Seiya Suzuki stood on second as the automatic runner. Alex Bregman doubled him home. Ian Happ doubled Bregman home. Chicago led 4-2 before St. Louis took another swing.
One night earlier, the Cardinals had walked off the Cubs in 10. Thursday night, Chicago returned the favor.
The Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 in 10 innings. Jacob Webb earned the win. Luis Gastelum took the loss. Aaron Civale closed it.
Pallante kept St. Louis close for six-plus
Andre Pallante worked 6 1/3 innings. He allowed seven hits, two walks, and two earned runs. He struck out three on 90 pitches.
Chicago scratched a run across in the fourth when Bregman scored on Happ's flyout and a throwing error by Lars Nootbaar. Dansby Swanson scored in the seventh on Michael Busch's single. Pallante left after that inning with the game tied again after JJ Wetherholt's response.
George Soriano, Ryne Stanek, and Riley O'Brien kept the Cubs from breaking through in regulation. Gastelum entered the 10th and could not survive Bregman and Happ.
Assad and the Chicago bullpen matched St. Louis pitch for pitch
Javier Assad lasted 4 1/3 innings. He allowed six hits, two walks, and one earned run. He struck out six.
Bryan Torres singled home Nootbaar in the second for St. Louis' first run. Wetherholt then tied the game 2-2 with a solo homer to right in the seventh, his 16th of the season.
Ryan Rolison, Caleb Thielbar, and Gavin Hollowell bridged the middle. Webb worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings around the 10th-inning rally and earned the win. Civale retired the Cardinals in the bottom of the 10th for the save.
Chicago's staff never buried St. Louis. It also never handed the game away after Wetherholt's homer.
Bregman and Happ wrote the 10th. Hoerner filled the gaps
Bregman finished 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Happ doubled in the 10th for the second insurance run. Nico Hoerner went 3-for-5. Busch drove in Swanson. Pete Crow-Armstrong had two hits.
Wetherholt finished 2-for-5 with the game-tying homer. Torres drove in one. Nootbaar scored once. The Cardinals had enough contact to win a close game and not enough sequencing to survive the 10th.
One night after Herrera's walk-off double, St. Louis watched Chicago use the same extra-inning format against it.
AthX Engine scored another tight Cubs night
AthX Engine, AthX's projection and scoring system, gave Chicago nine team fantasy points (FP). Bregman scored eight hitting FP. Pallante still earned 10.33 pitching FP in defeat for six-plus innings with two earned runs.
Daily fantasy points measure what happened on the field. Dynamic pricing also accounts for market activity and other price inputs. A ninth team-FP win can matter without matching a share-price move.
The series stays messy. Chicago leaves with the split chance
The Cubs improved to 62-47. St. Louis fell to 54-55. The two clubs keep trading late innings and one-run margins.
Bregman and Happ made sure Thursday's extra chapter belonged to Chicago.
