Chiefs 33, Colts 30: Butker Wins It as Overtime Expires

September 20, 2026 - Kansas City - The kick sailed with zeros on the clock. Harrison Butker had already made one in overtime. The 40-yarder was the one that sent Arrowhead home 2-0.

The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Indianapolis Colts 33-30 in overtime. Patrick Mahomes completed 32 of 47 for 382 yards and three touchdowns. Kenneth Walker III ran 24 times for 117 and caught six for 61. Travis Kelce had nine for 101 and a score. Indianapolis is 0-2 after a game it kept tying and never finished.

CBS noted it was the second straight year Kansas City beat the Colts on a field goal in overtime. The first 60 minutes were tied at 27. The extra 10 were a 31-yarder, a review, a 38-yard answer, three Walker runs, a 22-yard swing pass, and Butker from 40.

The third quarter that hid the ball

Kansas City held it for all but 2:22 of the third. Mahomes found Jalen Royals for a go-ahead score. Butker added a field goal to start the fourth. The lead was 27-20.

Jonathan Taylor had already scored once. He scored again with 5:37 left, finishing an 8 1/2-minute drive that tied it at 27. He ran 24 times for 92 yards and those two touchdowns and caught four for 40. Tyler Warren had the Colts' receiving score. Josh Downs caught seven for 72.

Daniel Jones went 22 of 31 for 210 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. It was enough to keep answering. It was not enough to get the ball back after the last kick. Neither offense scored again in regulation. Overtime started even.

Butker finished 4 of 5. He made from 46, 28, 31, and 40 and missed from 51. Spencer Shrader went 3 for 3 from 42, 49, and the 38-yarder that tied overtime.

Down by contact, then 3:11 to win it

Butker's 31-yarder put Kansas City up 30-27. Jones then threw deep to Laquon Treadwell, who had beaten L'Jarius Sneed. Treadwell bobbled it, hit the ground, got up, and lost the ball. The Chiefs pounced. The play was a fumble on the field. Review said down by contact.

Indianapolis had a chance to end it from there and settled for Shrader from 38. 30-30. Kansas City took over with 3:11 left. Walker got three straight carries to midfield. When the Colts stacked the line, Mahomes flipped it to him for 22 yards to the Indianapolis 24. Butker walked on. Time expired. Good.

Walker was the second-game version of the back who ran for 173 on Monday night in Week 1. No rushing touchdown this time. The receiving work was the difference on the last drive. Kelce looked like the Kelce who has been doing this for a decade. Mahomes, in his second game back from the knee, had his 57th career 300-yard passing night, per Sporting News.

The Colts did the hard part twice: they tied a home favorite in regulation and again in overtime. They did not get a third snap after the 22-yarder.
