Capitals 5, Hurricanes 2: Tuch's Debut Buries the Cup Champs

October 2, 2026 - Raleigh - Alex Tuch had been a Capital for an offseason and one period. By 14:23 of the first, he had two goals, the building was quiet, and the Stanley Cup champions were already chasing.

The Washington Capitals beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-2 at Lenovo Center. Washington is 1-0-0. Carolina is 0-1-1 after opening Tuesday with a 1-0 overtime loss to Florida.

Logan Thompson stopped 31 of 33. Alex Ovechkin opened his 22nd NHL season with an assist on Tuch's first goal. The AP recap, the ESPN box, and the NHL landing all match: Tuch 2, then Cole Hutson, Jakob Chychrun, Ryan Leonard.

Three in the first, before Carolina found the net

Tuch opened at 6:33. Wrist shot. Helpers from Pierre-Luc Dubois and Ovechkin. 1-0.

Hutson, a Capitals defenseman, snapped one at 11:33. The NHL play lists assists for Ilya Protas and Aliaksei Protas. 2-0.

Tuch again at 14:23, a backhand, Dubois and Tom Wilson on the play. 3-0 after 20 minutes. Washington had turned an opener on the road against the Cup champs into a track meet Carolina never joined.

Chychrun made it 4-0 at 1:36 of the second, a power-play snap with Dylan Strome the lone assist. Carolina finally answered on the power play at 16:50: Sebastian Aho from Andrei Svechnikov and Jackson Blake. Eight seconds later Leonard snapped home Strome and Chychrun. 5-1. The building had 3:02 of life. Washington took it back immediately.

Logan Stankoven tipped one at 10:50 of the third from K'Andre Miller and William Carrier. 5-2. That was the last goal.

Period scores tell the same story as the landing. Washington 3-0 after one. Washington 5-1 after two. Carolina's even-strength answer waited until the third. Leonard's goal eight seconds after Aho's was the dagger the AP recap flagged: Carolina had 3:10 of life in the second, then 5-1.

Tuch played 16:38 with three shots and a plus-2. Chychrun played 18:51. Hutson played 17:08 with three shots, two blocks, and 4 PIM. Strome's two assists came in 13:11. Ovechkin's 12:46 was not a 20-minute night. It was enough for the first helper of year 22.

33 shots, two goals, and a Caps penalty parade

Carolina outshot Washington 33-27 and spent the second half of the game on the power play. Washington took slashing, cross-checking, tripping, interference, too many men, holding, and another cross-check. Aho converted one of those. Thompson stopped the rest.

Brandon Bussi started for Carolina and stopped 22 of 27. Five goals against in a home opener against a club that just added Tuch from Buffalo is a long night, not a fluke of one bounce. Svechnikov led all skaters with six shots in 19:51. He finished with an assist and no goal. Stankoven played 20:15, the heaviest Hurricanes forward ice, and scored the last one. Aho's power-play goal at 16:50 of the second was Carolina's only conversion on a night full of Washington box time.

The penalty sheet kept feeding Carolina looks that Thompson ate. Matching roughing at 2:21 of the first. Carolina slashing at 1:09 of the second, which became Chychrun's power-play goal 27 seconds later. Washington then took cross-checking, tripping, interference, too many men, holding, and more cross-checks. A late third-period pile included a Carolina 10-minute misconduct at 19:18. None of it changed 5-2.

Ovechkin played 12:46, put one shot on Bussi, and left with the primary helper on the first goal of Washington's season. Twenty-second opening night. Still on the first scoring play.

Attendance was 18,905. Carolina hosts no one tomorrow. Both clubs fly: Washington at Tampa Bay on Saturday night, Carolina at Philadelphia.

AthX Engine on a 5-2 road opener

AthX Engine team scoring pays the win and 2.2 per goal for, minus 1.0 per goal against. Washington's 21.00 is the top club line on this five-game Friday. Carolina floors at 0 (2.2 x 2 goals minus 5 against).

Thompson's 31 saves, two goals against, and the win are 13.00, the best goalie line that posted to the public daily board. Tuch is 10.30. Chychrun is 8.80 (goal, assist, power-play bonus, three shots, a block, 2 PIM). Strome is 6.70. Svechnikov is 6.60 in a loss. Hutson's box (1 G, 3 SOG, 2 BLK, 4 PIM) is 5.80; he is not seeded on AthX player pages yet, so the name stays unlinked.

Fantasy points measure the box. Price is what traders will pay for Tuch in a Capitals sweater and for a Hurricanes club that is 0-1-1 after two home games. They are not the same number.
