Canucks 4, Flames 1: Four in the Third After a Quiet 40

October 3, 2026 - Vancouver - Calgary led 1-0 after two periods at Rogers Arena. Then Vancouver scored four times in the third, and a Battle of British Columbia that had been stuck became a 4-1 home win.

The Vancouver Canucks beat the Calgary Flames. Vancouver is 2-1-0. Calgary is 0-2-0. Leevi Merilainen stopped 23 of 24 in his first start for the Canucks, the AP recap said. Devin Cooley stopped 22 of 25.

Liam Ohgren, in his 100th NHL game, scored the tying goal and assisted on the winner. That winner came from defenseman Elias Pettersson, a backhand over Cooley's glove at 9:04 of the third. Elias Pettersson the center had an assist on the empty-netter. Two players, same name, same sweater. The box splits them. The AP recap gave the go-ahead goal to the defenseman.

Coronato in the first, then 40 quiet minutes

Matt Coronato scored on the power play at 14:51 of the first from Zayne Parekh and Joel Farabee. 1-0 Calgary. Shots were close all night (26-24 Vancouver). The second period had no goals.

Merilainen held that 1-0 until the third. Cooley did the same the other way until Ohgren arrived.

Four goals in 15:48

Ohgren tied it at 1:28 of the third from Paul Cotter and Tom Willander. 1-1.

Pettersson the defenseman scored at 9:04 from Ohgren and Willander. The AP recap described a pass from Ohgren and a backhand past Cooley's glove. 2-1.

Drew O'Connor scored at 16:33 from Linus Karlsson. 3-1. Aatu Raty hit the empty net at 17:16 from Karlsson and Pettersson the center. 4-1.

Willander had two assists in 20:16. Karlsson had two. Coronato finished minus-4. Zach Whitecloud blocked five shots in 25:01. Attendance was 16,591.

Calgary visits Seattle on Sunday. Vancouver hosts Vegas the same night.

AthX Engine after a four-goal third

AthX Engine (our projection and scoring system) scored Merilainen at 11.00 (win, 23 saves, one goal against). He is not seeded on AthX player pages yet, so the name stays unlinked. Ohgren's goal, assist, and three shots are 8.30, also unlinked. Willander is 5.50. O'Connor is 5.20. Coronato is 5.60. The center Pettersson is 3.60 on an assist, a shot, and a block. The defenseman Pettersson's goal, shot, and block are 5.10. That second Pettersson is not a separate seeded profile, so the go-ahead scorer stays unlinked. Raty and Karlsson stay unlinked.

Vancouver's team line is 19.80, tied with Utah and Minnesota. Calgary floors at 0.

Fantasy points measure the box. Price is what traders will pay for a third-period comeback and for a first start that ended 4-1. They are not the same number.
