Bruins 6, Mammoth 1: Pastrnak's First Two as Captain, 36 Saves from Swayman

October 8, 2026 - Boston - David Pastrnak had gone four games without a goal as the Bruins captain. At 14:22 of the first he snapped one five-hole on the power play, and TD Garden had the night it came for.

The Boston Bruins beat the Utah Mammoth 6-1. Boston is 3-2-0. Utah is 3-2-0. Shots were 37-22 Utah. Attendance was 17,850. Jeremy Swayman stopped 36 of 37. Boston went 3-for-4 on the power play after entering 0-for-10, the NHL recap said. Utah entered 8-for-13 with the man advantage and went 0-for-7.

Pastrnak finished with two goals and two assists. Morgan Geekie had a goal and two assists, all on the power play. Casey Mittelstadt, Mason Lohrei, and Matthew Poitras scored too. Mittelstadt and Poitras are unlinked.

Jack McBain scored Utah's only goal. Sebastian Cossa started, stopped 5 of 8, and sat after 15:51. Karel Vejmelka stopped 11 of 14 the rest of the way. Cossa is unlinked. The NHL box is the line: Cossa the starter, Vejmelka the relief. An Associated Press recap on ESPN swapped that order. The gamecenter file did not.

3-0 before Cossa sat, then Pastrnak from the other circle

Mittelstadt opened it at 10:06, a wrist from the left dot to the short side. Assists to James Hagens and Elias Lindholm. Hagens is not seeded on AthX. 1-0.

Pastrnak's first of the season, and first as captain, came at 14:22. Quick wrist from the top of the right circle, Cossa screened, five-hole. Frederic Brunet's first NHL point, the NHL recap said, and Geekie. Brunet is unlinked. 2-0. Pastrnak, per NHL.com: it gave a huge boost. Everything was clicking. Big game for special teams.

Lohrei made it 3-0 at 15:51. He gained the blue line, cut to the net, and went stick side. Poitras and Mark Kastelic on the play. That was the last shot Cossa saw.

Utah captain Clayton Keller told NHL.com they hung Cossa out to dry. "We got embarrassed tonight." They were not ready. Boston was. Simple mistakes, and they rolled over.

Boston coach Marco Sturm, on Pastrnak, to NHL.com: you get one goal and all of a sudden you feel it. There is pressure with the C. He was glad the drought was over.

Geekie, Poitras, five stitches, then McBain ruins the shutout

Pastrnak's second at 4:40 of the second, a one-timer off Geekie's cross-ice saucer, high glove on Vejmelka. Hampus Lindholm the other helper. 4-0.

Geekie on the man advantage at 7:57 from Pastrnak and Pavel Zacha. Zacha is unlinked. 5-0. Poitras at 14:08, wrist off a Pastrnak pass. 6-0. The NHL recap said Poitras took a puck to the face in the first, needed five stitches at intermission, stayed in, and scored his first of the season in 9:51.

Geekie told NHL.com special teams had been struggling, the kills mattered, and Utah's power play is lethal. Boston's penalty kill kept it at bay.

McBain deflected one at 9:48 of the third from Dmitri Simashev and Barrett Hayton. Simashev is unlinked. 6-1. First point of the season for McBain. Swayman's shutout bid ended. Thirty-six saves still held.

Utah coach Andre Tourigny told NHL.com they had a decent start with the puck deep, then Boston capitalized, and special teams tipped the scale. The Mammoth visit Buffalo on Saturday. Boston hosts Philadelphia.

JJ Peterka played his first game against Utah since the June 26 trade, the NHL notes said. No shots, minus-1, 12:28. Nick Schmaltz's four-game goal streak ended.

The NHL recap said Pastrnak tied Brad Marchand at 422 for fourth on Boston's all-time goals list and posted his 19th four-point game.
