August 16, 2026 - Los Angeles - Logan Henderson was the name that kept coming up in hypothetical Brewers packages for Tarik Skubal before the deadline. On Sunday he outpitched the pitcher Milwaukee never acquired.
Henderson (7-2) threw seven innings, three hits, one earned run, one walk, six strikeouts. Longest outing of his two-year major league career. The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-2, took three of four, and won the season series 4-3. That last part is the one October might actually use.
Edman's glove, then Milwaukee's lead
Brandon Lockridge scored in the second because Tommy Edman booted a ball. Luis Lara reached on a fielder's choice to short, Lockridge came home, and Edman's error at second kept the inning alive. 1-0 Milwaukee. Unearned. The kind of run that sits on a starter's card even when it shouldn't.
Max Muncy tied it in the fourth with a solo homer to right. 1-1. That was the only earned run Henderson allowed. Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts did not drive anyone in. The Dodgers' 2 came from two solo shots, hours apart.
Jackson Chourio kept reaching. Three hits, three runs. Jake Bauers kept driving him in. RBI single in the fifth, 2-1. RBI double in the seventh, 3-1. Andrew Vaughn singled Bauers home, 4-1. Bauers finished 4-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs. Four hits after he had already driven in the series opener's winner on Thursday. That is a weekend, not a box-score fluke.
Skubal goes 109. Henderson goes longer.
Skubal (7-7) worked six innings, seven hits, two runs, one earned, two walks, seven strikeouts. Career-high 109 pitches. He had not thrown more than 96 this season. Dave Roberts let him finish the sixth. Skubal wanted it. The line looks like a quality start. The decision looks like a loss.
This was his third start as a Dodger. He is 0-2 with a 3.18 ERA over 17 innings since the debut on Aug. 4. The most expensive arm at the deadline has been fine. He has not been a series-flipper. Henderson, the name that stayed in Milwaukee, was the better pitcher on Sunday.
The ninth made the final uglier for Los Angeles. Edman missed another one. David Hamilton reached on a fielder's choice, Chourio and Lara scored, 6-1. Andy Pages homered in the bottom half. 6-2. Two errors, three Milwaukee runs on Edman's account. Fundamentals have been the Dodgers' problem since the end of July. They have lost 11 of 16. Sunday was another night of it.
Line: Brewers 6 runs on 11 hits; Dodgers 2 runs on 6 hits, 2 errors; Henderson 7 IP, 1 ER.
A season series that might show up in October
Milwaukee is 77-48. Three games clear of Los Angeles for the best record in the majors. The Brewers also own the head-to-head tiebreaker. If these clubs meet in a seeding argument, Sunday's 6-2 is one of the games on the ledger.
Last year the Dodgers lost the season series to Milwaukee, then swept them in the NLCS. This year Los Angeles has said home-field and a first-round bye are the priority. They are a half-game outside the top two NL seeds after this weekend. They also just handed Milwaukee the season series. Dating to July 31, the Dodgers have lost 11 of 16. The lapse has been offensive and defensive. Edman's two errors were the Sunday version.
I would not bury Skubal after one quality-start loss. I would not pretend Henderson didn't win the matchup either. Seven innings, one earned, the longest outing of his career, against the club that spent July asking whether he was worth dealing. Milwaukee kept him. He just beat the prize.
The Brewers fly out with three of four and the best record in baseball. The Dodgers stay home with another reminder that 109 pitches and seven strikeouts do not fix two errors and a quiet Ohtani-Betts night. Pages and Muncy went deep. The rest of the lineup did not.
Bauers will get another four-hit look somewhere. Chourio will keep scoring. Henderson will get another chance to throw seven. Skubal will get another chance to throw 100. Sunday already has a winner.
AthX Engine angle
Henderson scored 23 AthX Engine pitching fantasy points, second on Sunday's slate behind only Noah Cameron's one-hitter. Bauers had 9 hitting fantasy points. Chourio had 7. Skubal still scored 14 pitching fantasy points on the quality start. The Brewers finished with 13 team fantasy points. AthX Engine (our projection and scoring system) graded Henderson's seven innings ahead of Skubal's six, which is how length and the earned-run column show up on a daily board.
