Brewers 13, Reds 9: Mitchell's Night After the 20-0

A night after 20, Milwaukee still scored 13

September 12, 2026 - Milwaukee - Garrett Mitchell went 4-for-5 with a homer, a double, four RBI, and a stolen base, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cincinnati Reds 13-9 one night after a 20-0 playoff clinch. The Associated Press recap said Milwaukee had never scored that many runs in a two-game stretch. Thirty-three in two nights will do that.

Partly cloudy, 78 degrees, wind 10 mph out to center. First pitch 6:10 p.m. Attendance 41,167. The game lasted 2 hours, 58 minutes. Friday was a two-hitter. Saturday was a track meet that Milwaukee decided before the sixth.

The Brewers are 93-56. Their magic number to clinch the NL Central is three, the AP recap said. The Reds are 69-79 and have lost five straight. They have allowed 47 runs in their last three games (14-1 to the Dodgers on Wednesday, then 20 and 13 in Milwaukee). Sportradar told the AP the last time Cincinnati gave up 47-plus over three games was September 1901. No major-league team had done it since the Red Sox allowed 55 in July 2022.

Two first-inning homers, then Cincinnati tied it

Brady Singer (6-14) lasted four innings, eight hits, eight runs, five walks, five strikeouts, 95 pitches, three homers. Jackson Chourio walked. Brice Turang then hit a two-run drive to center, his 19th. 2-0. William Contreras reached. Mitchell followed with a two-run shot to right-center, his 11th. 4-0. Two swings, first inning, and Singer had already given the night away.

Shane Drohan could not hold it. Eugenio Suárez homered to left-center in the second, his 23rd. 4-1. Elly De La Cruz doubled Dane Myers home in the third. 4-2. Mitchell scored on Cooper Pratt's single in the bottom half, Pratt taking second on Myers' throw. 5-2.

The fourth was the tie and the answer. Suárez scored on JJ Bleday's double. Juan Brito then hit a two-run homer to left-center, his second. 5-5. Drohan was done after 3 2/3: five hits, five runs, two walks, four strikeouts, two homers. Milwaukee did not stay tied long. Jake Bauers and Christian Yelich were on when Contreras hit a three-run drive to left-center, his 17th. 8-5. Singer's night ended on that swing.

Five in the fifth, then Harrison's first relief look

Graham Ashcraft faced the fifth and retired one batter. Pratt singled. Chourio singled. Turang singled. Bauers singled Pratt and Chourio home. Yelich singled Turang in. Contreras was walked intentionally. Mitchell doubled Bauers and Yelich home. 13-5. Ashcraft: one-third of an inning, six hits, five runs, one walk. Pierce Johnson got the last two outs of the inning. The Brewers had scored all 13 of their runs in the first five innings, the AP recap said.

Chad Patrick (9-4) got the win with 1 1/3 scoreless, one hit, four strikeouts, 22 pitches. DL Hall, Antonio Senzatela, and Aaron Ashby kept the sixth and seventh quiet. Then Kyle Harrison made his first relief appearance of the season and allowed hits to the first four batters he faced. All four scored. The AP recap said he has given up 19 runs (17 earned) over 7 1/3 innings in his last three outings, his ERA climbing from 2.79 to 3.98.

Suárez singled Will Banfield home. Brito singled Suárez in. Ke'Bryan Hayes bounced into a double play that still scored Bleday. 13-9. Abner Uribe threw the ninth: one hit, one walk, two strikeouts. Cincinnati put the tying run in the on-deck circle and never got there.

Mitchell finished 4-for-5. Contreras went 1-for-3 with two walks and three RBI. Turang had two hits, a walk, and two RBI. Pratt went 3-for-5. Yelich had two hits and an RBI. Bauers drove in two. Sal Frelick went 0-for-5. The Brewers left seven on and still scored 13.

Suárez and Brito, and a staff that could not finish

Suárez went 3-for-4 with a walk, three runs, and two RBI. Brito went 3-for-4 with three RBI. De La Cruz had two doubles. Bleday had two hits. Tyler Stephenson doubled. The Reds piled up 14 hits and still lost by four because the first five innings in Milwaukee were a different game than the last four.

Tony Santillan, Tejay Antone, and Emilio Pagán threw scoreless innings after Ashcraft. That is the cruel part of a 13-5 hole. The bullpen can look fine and the box score still says 13-9.

Sunday is Chase Burns (15-3, 2.73) against Robert Gasser (4-5, 4.43). Milwaukee already punched the playoff ticket on Friday. Saturday was the night the magic number moved to three and the lineup refused to treat 20-0 like a hangover. Cincinnati has to stop a three-game slide that has already entered the 1901 footnote.
