September 4, 2026 - Cincinnati - The Cincinnati Reds led 6-4 after three. Eugenio Suárez had just hit a three-run homer. Shane Drohan was already in trouble. Then the fifth inning happened, and the Milwaukee Brewers left Great American Ball Park with a 10-7 win.

Jackson Chourio led off the fifth with a single. Christian Yelich walked. William Contreras hit a grounder that looked like a double play. Elly De La Cruz bobbled it. Bases loaded.

Cooper Pratt tripled inside the first-base bag and cleared them. He scored on a wild pitch. Milwaukee led 9-6, and Cincinnati never got the inning back.

Pratt finished with a season-high four RBI. That fifth inning is the whole game, even if the first four were louder.

Suárez's night, and a walk-up that fit the calendar

Suárez is back from becoming a U.S. citizen. His walk-up song Friday was Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the U.S.A." He hit his 21st homer of the season, a three-run shot off Drohan that put Cincinnati up 6-4 in the third. It was also the 210th homer of his Reds career, tying Ken Griffey Jr. for ninth on the franchise list.

Matt McLain had already gone deep, his 14th. De La Cruz went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Dane Myers had two hits, two runs, a double, and a stolen base. The Reds scored one in the first, two in the second, and three in the third. For three innings this looked like a Cincinnati night.

Drohan lasted four innings and allowed six runs on five hits, including both homers. Rhett Lowder, the Cincinnati starter, was charged with seven runs (six earned) in four innings. The error in the fifth turned his line from messy to decisive.

Cincinnati's early lead was not empty. The Reds scored one in the first, two in the second on McLain's homer, and three in the third on Suárez. Sal Stewart drove in a run. Tyler Stephenson walked and scored. Myers doubled and stole a base. For three innings the home club had the louder lineup. Then it stopped.

Turang, Hamilton, and a 12-hit road win

Brice Turang went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs, and three RBI. David Hamilton tripled, stole a base, and drove in one. Contreras doubled, walked, scored twice, and drove in one. The Brewers had 12 hits and left nine on base, which is a lot of traffic and a lot of finishing.

Milwaukee scored two in the second, two in the third, five in the fifth, and one in the sixth. Cincinnati added a run in the seventh and nothing after. Chad Patrick threw two scoreless innings for the win, his eighth against four losses. Aaron Ashby got a hold. Trevor Megill struck out the side in the ninth for his 26th save in 28 chances.

That is a September bullpen doing September work. The Brewers did not need a complete game. They needed someone to stop the third-inning leak. Patrick did.

88 wins, 20 games left

Milwaukee is 88-54. Ten more wins in the last 20 games would set a franchise record for victories. That is the number hanging over a 10-7 road win that could have been a 6-4 loss if De La Cruz fields a routine grounder.

Cincinnati is 67-74. Suárez can still change a series. McLain can still leave the yard. The Reds cannot keep handing five-run innings to a club chasing a win record.
