Blues 7, Senators 2: Suter, Neighbours, McTavish Score Twice

October 13, 2026 - Ottawa - Colton Parayko won a wall battle in his own end. Pius Suter took the pass, went in alone, and beat Samuel Ersson from the left hash marks. It was still the first period. Canadian Tire Centre already had a short-handed 1-0 problem.

The St. Louis Blues beat the Ottawa Senators 7-2. St. Louis is 3-2-1, two in a row and points in three straight (2-0-1), the NHL recap said. Ottawa is 5-2-0 after a three-game winning streak ended, including a 4-1 win in New Jersey on Monday. Shots were 26-17 St. Louis. Jake Neighbours, Pavel Buchnevich, Jonatan Berggren, Adam Jiricek, Ross Johnston, and Brandon Carlo are not seeded on AthX player pages, so those names stay unlinked.

Suter, Neighbours, and Mason McTavish each scored twice. Jiricek scored his first NHL goal in his sixth game. Buchnevich had three assists. Joel Hofer stopped 15 of 17. Claude Giroux and Fabian Zetterlund scored. Ersson stopped 19 of 26. Linus Ullmark dressed and did not face a shot.

A short-handed punch, then it got away

Suter's short-handed snap at 14:28 was the only goal of the first. Blues coach Jim Montgomery told NHL.com that getting that one was key against a 5-2 club, and that both special teams were a pleasant sign.

Neighbours made it 2-0 at 13:20 of the second from the high slot, Robert Thomas and Dylan Holloway on the play. The Associated Press recap said Neighbours stepped into the top of the slot and went glove side through traffic.

Giroux cut it to 2-1 at 17:52. Tim Stützle won a battle behind the net and sent a backhand to the right circle. Wrist shot, high blocker. The AP recap put Giroux at 1,170 career points, tied with Bobby Hull for 59th. Thirty-three seconds later McTavish restored 3-1. Berggren found him outside the crease on a 3-on-2, surrounded by three Senators, and he backhanded a give-and-go into the open net. Connor McMichael had the other assist.

Ottawa coach Travis Green told NHL.com the execution was sloppy. The power play went 1-for-4 and minus-1. After the second, he said it could have been 1-1 or 2-2. Then it got away.

Four in the third, one first NHL goal

Suter's second came at 7:54 of the third, a one-timer from a sharp angle that snuck under Ersson's right arm. Ross Johnston and Carlo drew assists. Neighbours tapped Buchnevich's rush feed at 14:46. 5-1. McTavish one-timed from the right circle on the power play at 15:33, McMichael and Buchnevich. 6-1. Jiricek beat Ersson from above the right circle at 16:32, Suter and McTavish. First NHL goal. 7-1.

Zetterlund scored on the power play at 18:33 from Stephen Halliday and Shane Pinto. 7-2. Halliday is unlinked.

Hofer told NHL.com it was a great team effort, they kept it simple, and they got rewarded. Suter said they did not have to play a 200-foot game: puck deep, hard forecheck, possession at the blue line. Giroux: they did not help their goaltender in the third, and it was not on him. Captain Thomas Chabot told NHL.com the details were off and they will answer.

Ridly Greig did not play the final 9:09. Green called it a strain. Dylan Peterson was plus-1 in 8:57 in his NHL debut, the NHL recap said. St. Louis visits Minnesota on Thursday. Ottawa hosts the Islanders that night.
