September 20, 2026 - Houston - Ja'Marr Chase and Derek Stingley Jr. ran the right sideline together. They hit at the pylon. Chase dragged a toe. Joe Burrow thought he was falling down. Then the ball was a touchdown, and the Cincinnati Bengals finally had a lead they would not give back.
Cincinnati beat the Houston Texans 20-6 at Reliant Stadium and went 2-0. Houston is 0-2. Chase caught seven for 75 and both Bengals touchdowns. Burrow was 20 of 31 for 207, two scores, no picks, and five sacks. C.J. Stroud threw for 353 yards on 30 of 55 and never found the end zone.
A 32-yard toe drag that broke a 0-0 game
The first quarter was empty. Houston fumbled a punt snap. The Texans later failed on fourth-and-inches from the Cincinnati 18, the club wrote. Ka'imi Fairbairn missed from 58, per Houston's wrap. Three red-zone chances, zero touchdowns, and the game was still 0-0. Stroud had yards. He did not have points. Nico Collins sat. Houston still found eight receivers. None of them scored.
Cincinnati answered the next chance it got. Burrow hit Tee Higgins for 18 on third-and-8 and 23 on third-and-4, the Bengals said. Then he threw it high to Chase. Chase called it the second-best catch of his career, behind a Super Bowl grab as a rookie. Burrow called it unbelievable. 7-0 with 3:29 left in the half.
Fairbairn made 37 before the break. 7-3. That was as close as Houston got to a lead. Stroud had already been sacked. Cincinnati would sack him four times, same as Week 1, the Bengals wrote.
McPherson from 51, Chase from 18, McPherson from 57
Evan McPherson opened the third from 51. 10-3. Burrow rolled and found Chase crossing for 18. Reed Blankenship dove. Chase scored anyway. 17-3. It was Chase's 14th career game with two receiving touchdowns, Cincinnati said. A week after two catches for 12 yards against Tampa Bay, he had nine targets.
Fairbairn made 45. 17-6. McPherson answered from 57. 20-6. Stroud took an intentional grounding on the next series, ESPN wrote, and punted. Houston's red zone was 0 for 4. The backs finished with 18 rushing yards, the AP recap said. Stroud led Houston on the ground with 29.
Higgins led Cincinnati with 95 yards on five catches. Chase Brown ran 20 times for 80. The Bengals outgained Houston 267-374 on paper and still won by two scores because Houston never scored a touchdown. Time of possession was 30:49 to 29:11. Cincinnati was 1 of 1 in the red zone. Houston was 0 of 4. Dalton Schultz caught 12 for 140, a career high the Texans and Reuters both listed. No score attached to it. The NFL gamebook has the same empty total: 20-6, two passing touchdowns, zero rushing scores, two Fairbairn makes and one miss.
Burrow played through a tight back that cost him practice time, ESPN wrote. Houston sacked him five times. Will Anderson Jr., Danielle Hunter, and Sheldon Rankins each had a sack in the nflverse line. Logan Hall had one as well. Burrow still finished with a 105.2 rating and no turnovers, the Bengals said. He called his own night incredibly average. The scoreboard disagreed.
A front that would not let Houston run
DeMeco Ryans said the key was the line of scrimmage. Houston did not control Cincinnati's front. That forced passing downs, and passing downs without Collins turned into 55 attempts. Cedric Johnson had two sacks for Cincinnati. Jonathan Allen had one. Shemar Stewart had one. Four sacks, four tackles for loss, two Chase touchdowns. Zac Taylor called it a throwback win against a team he respects.
Houston is staring at three of the next four on the road, the club wrote. Indianapolis is next. Cincinnati visits Pittsburgh. 2-0 in the AFC North is real. Six points allowed on the road against this Texans roster is the part that will travel.
Ryans said his team got outplayed up front. That is the loss without the poetry. Taylor said it would not always be pretty against Houston. A 20-6 final on the road, with five sacks taken and none given back as points, was the pretty version.
Chase did not complain after Week 1. Taylor said he did not hear one word. He just caught the ball at the pylon and again in the end zone. That is the whole story of 20-6.
AthX Engine on a 353-yard empty night
AthX Engine NFL scoring already has the Week 2 line in. Cedric Johnson's two sacks land at 67.00, the top total in this game. Anderson is 55.00. Schultz is 53.00. Allen is 44.00. Rankins is 41.00. Daxton Hill is 39.00. Stroud is 35.49. Chase is 34.25. Cincinnati's team line is 70.50. Houston is -19.00.
Fantasy points measure the box. Price is what traders will pay for Chase after two scores on a quiet Week 1, and for Stroud after 353 yards that bought six points. They move together. They are not the same number.
Track Burrow, Chase, Higgins, Stroud, Schultz, and both clubs on the marketplace. Cincinnati visited Pittsburgh on Sept. 27. Houston visited Indianapolis that afternoon.
