Bears 31, Falcons 23: Williams Returns, Gordon Ends It

October 18, 2026 - Atlanta - Third-and-6 from the Falcons 28. The lead was eight. Michael Penix Jr. had already thrown two fourth-quarter touchdowns. Kyler Gordon came again. The ball came out. Devin Bush fell on it at the 28, and the Chicago Bears walked out 31-23.

The Atlanta Falcons are 2-4 after two straight home losses. Chicago is 4-2. Caleb Williams had not taken a regular-season snap since a hamstring in Week 2. He went 30 of 36 for 305 yards, one score, no picks, and a 111.2 rating. NFL Research, via NFL.com, called it the highest completion rate by a Bears quarterback with at least 30 attempts in franchise history.

Penix started. Tua Tagovailoa is a Falcon this season. He did not appear in the weekly line.

14-0 before Atlanta had a first down that mattered

Williams completed his first 10 throws for 122 yards. The opener was 14 yards to Colston Loveland, a roll right after he escaped the pocket, Loveland holding it through a Jessie Bates hit. Third-and-11 on that drive was a hook-and-ladder: Williams to Rome Odunze, lateral to Roschon Johnson, 12 yards and a first down, the Bears wrote.

The defense got a three-and-out. Nine plays, 59 yards. D'Andre Swift from 4 on third-and-goal. 14-0. At that point Chicago had outgained Atlanta 154-1, Ben Johnson's club said. NFL.com had the first-quarter margin at 154-3. Either way, the Falcons were still looking for a first useful snap.

Gordon and Bush stuffed Brian Robinson Jr. on third down. James Lynch batted fourth down. Cairo Santos then missed from 56, wide left. Penix hit Drake London for 39 on the next play and found Jahan Dotson from 13. 14-7, 5:45 of the second.

Atlanta's defense had finally sat Chicago down. Then Zachariah Branch muffed a punt after a fair-catch signal. Josh Blackwell recovered at the 10. Three plays later Swift scored from 2 on third-and-goal. 21-7, 1:26 left in the half. The Falcons said they had four first downs and 97 yards at the break, more than half of it from Bijan Robinson (51 yards on four carries by then). Time of possession in the half: Chicago 22:13, Atlanta 7:47.

31-7, then a Thursday-night substitution

The third quarter was more of the same. Dillon Thieneman sacked Penix on third down. Jahdae Walker's roughing-the-punter flag gave Atlanta a first down anyway. Jaylon Johnson broke up fourth-and-3 from the Chicago 28, London the target. Roschon Johnson punched in from 4. 28-7, 1:48 of the third.

On the kickoff, Zavier Scott stripped Branch. Nick McCloud recovered at the 31. Santos from 50. 31-7. Chicago had a short week coming, a Thursday night home game against New England, and Johnson started pulling starters. Montez Sweat, Dayo Odeyingbo, T.J. Edwards, and Tyrique Stevenson were already out. The coach said he was threading a needle.

Penix made him pay. Ten yards to Kyle Pitts, two-point pass to Branch. 31-15, 9:34 left. Roschon Johnson fumbled. Pitts from 5, two-point pass to London. 31-23, 5:41. Chicago went three-and-out. Atlanta took over at its 28 with 3:34 left.

Third-and-6, Branch for nine, first down on the field. Gordon's blitz drew a holding flag on Bijan Robinson. The next snap was the strip. Bush recovered with 2:54 left. Penix finished 19 of 33 for 225 yards, three touchdowns, no picks, and five sacks.

Williams 30 of 36, Gordon 3 sacks

Luther Burden III caught eight for 95. Loveland had six for 65 and the opener. Odunze added three for 39. Swift ran 16 times for 44 and two scores. Roschon Johnson led the ground game with 13 for 51 and the third-quarter touchdown. Chicago ran 33 times for 98, passed for 305, and held the ball 40:08 to 19:52, NFL.com said. The Bears were flagged 12 times for 133 yards.

Robinson finished with nine carries for 61, a season low, and two catches for minus-8, NFL.com wrote. Pitts caught five for 60 and both fourth-quarter scores. Dotson had three for 87 and the first Atlanta touchdown. London's 39-yarder was the play that finally got the Falcons on the board. Nick Folk made his only extra point. The two late scores both went for two.

Gordon had been on the PUP list since before camp with a calf. Johnson asked him Saturday morning if he was ready. Three sacks, two forced fumbles. NFL.com said he had 2.5 sacks in 45 career games before Sunday. Williams was 24 of 24 for 248 yards from a clean pocket, Next Gen Stats via NFL.com, the most attempts without an incompletion from a clean pocket since at least 2018.

The Falcons host the 49ers next week. Chicago hosts New England on Thursday.

AthX Engine on a 31-7 lead that got skinny

AthX Engine NFL scoring already has the Week 6 line in. Brandon Dorlus is 43.00. Gordon is 41.00. Penix is 38.25. LaCale London, Daniel Hardy, and Gervon Dexter Sr. are 38.00. Pitts is 34.50. Swift is 31.50. Loveland is 31.25. Williams is 31.15. Chicago's team line is 76.75. Atlanta's is 9.75.

Fantasy points measure the box. Price is what traders will pay for a Bears quarterback who just completed 83 percent in his first game back, and for a Falcons skill group that scored 16 in the fourth after it was already 31-7. They move together. They are not the same number.

Track Williams, Swift, Penix, Pitts, and both clubs on the marketplace. New England visits Chicago on Thursday. San Francisco visits Atlanta next Sunday.
